Title: Love Shack Shimmy 85-V65
Post by: Chaz on August 24, 2005, 09:16:28 PM
So I have had this strange shimmy happening while decelerating between 40-35mph for a while and I thought it might be my wheel or tire, well they check out ok. I recently changed my fork seals and oil's, still happening. I put 5Lbs of air in the forks and VIOLA! Shimmy is gone, cornering feels superb again. Amazing what 5Lbs of air can do.

Anyway thought I would share.

I have that problem I think when I am decellerating and take my hands of the bars the frontend will start to wobble is that the same thing that happened to you. This is a 3rd gen magna  I wonder if thats my problem. On top of that this is a new to me bike and don't have any Idea what kinda maintence was done on her if any.. I know I have changed the oil and sparkplugs but the front end I have not touched YET lolol but guess it's coming.

Someone correct me if I am wrong please, but isnt a deceleration shimmy a tire issue?  I think if memory serves me a tire that is slightly out of balance and or under inflated will do this.
If it is really bad then I would think about head steering bearings but that is usually noticeable at all speeds decel or accel, hehehehe.

I doubt you are wrong Greg, I assumed the same thing, has to be the tire but I took it off and down to Cycle Gear for balancing, they said it was fine and the air pressure was withing 3 lbs.

I have no idea what was causing it but I will continue to be extra sensitive to the front end and it's stability until I am certain I have addressed all issues.

The only time I see the problem you are describing is when my front tire gets lots of wear on it and the more wear the more the shimmy on deceleration.  Every time I replace the front tire the shimmy goes away.  You don't notice it unless you take your hands off the handlebars.

I have the 3rd.generation magna so there is no way to pressureize the forks.

roboto,
Sorry I missed your question.  Yes that is what was happening to me, though it was on the V65 not my 94. When I let go of the bars while decelerating between 40-35Mph the front end would wobble.

BTW - It is a brand new tire.
