Post by: MagnaDaddy on January 14, 2008, 10:15:37 AM
I installed the Dave Dodge Oil Mod on my '86 and learned a few things:

BTW I got her all buttoned up about 5pm on Sunday and went for a ride, that's the good part!!!

  • Second if the instructions say 2 hrs figure on half a day, (IF all goes well, which it didn't)
  • Third if you have cheap tools throw them out and go buy some good stuff!  My super cheapo 10mm wrench couldn't get the oil feed line bolt off the front head without bunging it up badly.  So I had to remove the carbs to get a socket wrench on there.  That wrench is in the trash now!

I second both these motions.  I suppose if you work in a commercial MC garage, after you have done the mod a few dozen times, maybe you could hit the advertised turn-around times.  I haven't yet.  It has been my experience that it is always quicker to do it right than to do it over, which is what happens when I try to hurry.

Good wrenches are a blessing for sure.  I have found that six point sockets, if you can get one on the bolt/nut, are far superior to twelve points.  I can't remember ever rounding off a bolt head or nut with a six-point.  (I have snapped a couple of bolts, though :-x)

What is the purpose of this mod?  Does it cool the oil?  Does the same benefit accrue to 3rd gens?

Glad you got it going.[/list]

If I'm not mistaken first gen V-65's had a potential problem with getting enough oil to the top end (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that has been corrected in later models. Not all V-65's were effected so the mod is a precaution.

Yep the cams could make a bit of knocking noises so the top end oil improvement kit helps cure this..

I'd been told that the 86 was "OK" but I figured more oil is better when there's metal rubbing together. The best part is how quiet it is now
