Title: Tackify leather
Post by: Lurkin on January 31, 2008, 02:48:58 PM
I am trying to find out if it is possible to "tack-ify" or sticky up the leather palm on a set of gloves.  This would need to be something that doesn't then stick to the grips, i.e., don't suggest pine tar ;-).

I have a set of Olympic insulated riding gloves that I use when it drops below 45 degrees.  The problem is that the leather palms on these gloves is slick enough that I have to hold on to the grips extra hard, and after 20-30 minutes my hands start to hurt.

I have a set of Joe Rocket gloves that I use for warm waether riding, and they do not have this slickness to them.  Rather, they seem to actually stick a bit to the grips.

Any ideas?

Thats always an issue in cold/cooler weather riding, gloves seem to be too bulky not giving good feel or seem a bit slick as you are experiencing.  Hand fatigue is already a concern with the cold, but to add that you feel that you have to increase your hold pressure is certain to bring about fatigue much quicker.
I wish I had an answer for ya on making em stick a bit..  What grips are on the bike??  As the stock units always felt slippery to me.

This may not be the answer but along the lines to finding one. Zip tie a piece of mat (diamond design) that holds dished in place around your grips for the colder months, places like Target, Home Depot, Lowes has this.

Thanks for the replies gents.  Yes, the grips are stock.  I've never had a problem with the stock grips when either bare-handing it, or with my Joe Rocket groves.

Actually, I have some of the plastic diamond mat (usually used for lining tool boxes).  I'll give it a try.

You probably know what i am talking about, the liner I am referring is not plastic, found in the household area.

I know those thick gloves can be a pain,
Maybe you should try a Throttle boss or a cruise controls.
I have a simple crampbuster.

Works well and fairly inexpensive.

You might try cleaning your grips and your gloves with a cloth dampened with alcohol, if that doesn't do it a small spritz of hair spray on your grips.
