Title: Flexible LED strips
Post by: MagnaDaddy on February 15, 2008, 01:17:05 PM
Does anybody have any experience with the flexible LED strips from folks like Custom Dynamics or the Motorcycle Safety store on eBay?   I'm wondering how well they stick, How directional is the light, usefulness as auxilary brake/turn lights, reliability, etc.

Link us to some photos and might have an opinion.

I custom fabricated "housings" to hold the LED strips that are 1/4" wide X 3/16" deep. I installed these strips in black plastic (1/4" thick) which I routed out to accept the strips. This piece was then sandwiched between 2 X 1/8" stainless steel plates. One plate was cut out to let the light shine through.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I made 1 each of these lights to mount at the end of the swing arm. Each one contains 4 strips of 10 amber LEDS each, used as signal lights, and a 15 red LED strip for my running/stop light.

I also took out the brake light completely and mounted a 6" strip of red LEDs (hidden inside the  fender so as not to be seen from the side) as my running/stop light. As it has evloved, I've modified the lights to give better viewability. I will be adding another 6" red strip parallel to the existing brake light, but wire it so it only comes on when I brake (for added contrast in daytime)

The best part: My friend does inspections (MVI) and he says "If I can see the light, it passes!"

This is my 3rd year with LEDs only, and I don't miss the old round signal lights nor the hugh brake light.

I'd like to post some pics soon, as I don't imagine my description is very clear at all.

Cheers!

It is likely that what I imagine of this installation is not what you have or described.  Pictures would certainly help.  I would really like to have LED tail lights (brake lights, turn signals, etc.), and have looked at some commercial ones, but haven't found any I thought I could make look good.

Sounds very interesting.  8)

Here's what I'm looking at
http://www.customdynamics.com/flex_led_array.htm (http://www.customdynamics.com/flex_led_array.htm)

What I want to do since I've lost the saddlebags is wrap a couple of these puppies around the lower ends of the shocks to give me brake lights down low.

I do not have the flexible strips but I did replace  my stock tailight with a 40 led light unit that I found at Loves that is made for trucks. After I bought the thick one they came out with a thinner one which is better, it fits in the stock hole without having to cut it. It is brighter and I think looks better. It is oval shaped, almost identical to the stock but has all those leds shining back at you. I had to replace the stock license lights as well since it is one unit, and I used the white leds in a 3 to a pod set, used two of them.
