Title: 87 stumbles
Post by: Charles S Otwell on September 06, 2005, 11:06:34 PM
My 87 seems to stumble the first few feet (15 to 20) then a sudden surge . this isn't a huge problem ,unless your in the middle of a left hand turn at an intersection then it gets a little hairy! Anyone had this problem, or have any suggestions on what the problem might be(fuel or ign.)? Any help would be appreciated.

Charles my bet is on the fuel side of the house, I would say you might need to clean and adjust the carbs.
Pull a plug and read it, should be golden brown like coffee with a lot of creamer in it.
If it is chaulky white then it is too lean, if dark almost black too rich.

Greg thanks for help.
My first thought was I need to watch for one of Gregs wrench sessions but since I need a new tire and a windsheild and the carb work before I spend the money for either of the fore mentioned, my second thought was. I wonder what kind of ride would a mootster make for a wrench session and some of the best BBQed brisket in Texas, and all the fixings (of course) . Oh did I mention the BBq would be free. But alas, I'm sure noone would go that far just for a bunch of old BBQ. I guess I'll just stay aroun T-town may go out to Lake Right Patman and watch some of the RC airplanes, they have this airfield down by the dam, I had told you about it hadn't I . Oh well, thanks again for everones help .

Charles, ya never know who might show up on a Saturday if FREE BBQ were to be had, LoL.
Texarkana is not that far of a ride, if you need or want a wrenching I am sure we can get something organized either here at my place or at yours.  Thing about my place is I have all the tools and you would not have to host all of us, LoL.
But I am sure if you were so inclined to host one I bet we could get together on what works for both our calendars.  Let me know.

Greg to tell you the truth I'm in need of a good bike evaluation. Because of the longer wheel base and lower seat height I decided to keep the 87 and sell the 82 . the 82 doesn't need anything but the 87  probably needs a little attention before I'll feel comfortable leaving town on it . I'm just not familier with the 87 enough to know what to expect of it . the last bike I rode was a 1200 Madura, they are so much like the vintage Magnas  that I felt right at home on the 82 V-45. Anyway I'd like someone that knows how the 87 should run and handle to ride it and tell me what it needs if anything. Let me see what I can offer as a host. I sure Jeff can smell the BBQ from there, I think he may have a little East Texas connections, Mt Pleasant area isn't it Jeff  I'll send you some info and let you guys decide.

Charles, Mt Pleasant area (and further east)is right. I have quite a few relatives out that direction. I've been needing to get out that way but I will have to cage it the next time I go. Mt Pleasant was a good place to get some hot links, is that BBQ place near downtown near the RR tracks still open? Seems like there was a Piggly Wiggly across the street from it.

Jeff I have racked my brain(not much time required for that lol) I can't place any of the older BBQ places downtown close to a Piggly Wiggly or train tracks. But then we haven't had a Piggly Wiggly in so long I can only remember where two of them were located. After rereading your post I wasn't sure if you were talking about Texarkana or Mt Pleasant. We have so many restaurants in Texarkana you can chunk a rock in any direction from any where and hit one.    anyway back to the original post I been eliminating a lot of small potential problems that could cause  the bike to stumble and run poorly I seem to be making some headway. I want to get as much out of the way as I can before I ask for help with the carbs .Everyone is so helpful, I don't want to waste anyone time. thanks for the reply talk to you later.
