Title: Strange noise
Post by: Mack on March 16, 2008, 11:58:27 AM
My Magna started making a strange noise yesterday. The best way that I can describe it is that is sounds like something slapping against the side covers. It doesn't make the noise when I am idling and revving the engine. It makes the noise when I accelerate or decelerate. It does it for sure in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. It may do it in the other but the wind noise may be so much that I can't hear it. The only thing that comes to my mind is the transmission but I would expect a different sound. It did seem to get worse before I could get home so right now I am afraid to ride it. Without any input from anyone on what to look for I may have to truck my bike to the next wrench session for help. Anybody have any ideas? Wait this is MOOT everyone will have an idea. How about does anyone have any GOOD ideas? LOL

Check to make sure your drive chain is adjusted correctly; it can cause a noise like you described, bur it would have to be pretty loose to do it.

Is it in Both engine case covers? Which side is loudest?

Do you have a Service Manual or have you looked at a Parts Diagram to see what the sound might be? Do you have a lift?

I checked the chain. I can actually push up on it hard enough that it will slap into the bottom of the swingarm. Sounds like I need to adjust the tension in the chain. I hope that is the problem. I was really worried that I had an internal engine problem there. Thanks for the input guys!

Properly adjusted, the chain WILL slap against the swing arm if pushed up hard. I know mine will.

I'm the worlds worst about letting my chain get loose and it sounds like the thing is coming apart.. But mine doesn't slap anything when it's adjusted.. I am due a new chain and sprockets, thanks for reminding me..

Does it ONLY do this when underway?  Or if you sitting still not moving as well?

A overly-dry chain will actually make a noise like this, as it try's to kink a bit.  Clean, Lube, Adjust the chain.

My 96 did the same exact thing last year.  New chain and sprockets solved the issue.
