Title: Ahhh, changing the coolant...
Post by: dan twomey on March 20, 2008, 07:22:01 PM
I'm looking for a little insight into changing the coolant on my 96.  I may be putting a little too much thought into this, but most of my mechanical experience is linked to cars and not motorcycles.  I checked my coolant yesterday and it's NASTY!  Definitely needs to be changed.  I noticed the catch tank is under the seat and there is no drain valve or bleeder valves on the radiator.  I'm used to fighting pockets of air and fighting to get to the bleeder valves on heater cores!

Is it really just as simple as draining the coolant from the lower hose connection and then refilling it from the radiator cap or catch tank???

I also plan on using the premix from Honda, unless anyone has any thoughts on that as well.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan you will have to remove the clutch cover to expose the front sprocket.  The water pump is located.  See PIC, I highlighted the drain bolt in RED
Then fill and run bringing the engine to operating temps, let cool, check fluid level and top off as necessary.

Remember to get coolant that is both silicate and phosphate free.  I have had luck at Wal-Mart with a Dex-Cool premix that is perfect.

Excuse my dirty spare engine...  I am turning it into a teaching aid.
