I HAVE A 2001 HONDA MAGNA. IT HAS ALL STOCK EXHAUST. I HAVE ADDED THE SHIM INSTALL AND RICHENED UP THE PILOT SCREWS TO 2-7/8 TURNS OUT FROM A LIGHT SEAT. I DO HAVE A K&N AIR FILTER INSTALLED. MY QUESTION IS NOW INSTEAD OF LEAN AT 3000 RPM IT SEEMS TO HAVE A SLIGHT FLAT SPOT AT AROUN 4500-5000 RPMS. IS THIS DUE TO THE K&N AIR FILTER? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS, LANCE
Looks like nobody has any experience with your topic; so as an old gear head I'll take a stab at it. The only way to say it is the air breather set up with certainty is to swap it out with a stock set up.
I can tell you from experience with other bikes though, they are very sensitive to any airbox/filter modifications. I would almost bet that your bike would straighten right out with the stock set up back in place. Let us know what you find out and be sure to get with us if you still have a problem.
Could also try adding a second shim (shims are equal to about half a jet size) would probably bring you where you need to be.
THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS. DUMMY ME THREW THE STOCK AIR FILTER AWAY, SO NO WAY OF KNOWING WITH STOCK. MAY TRY GREG'S IDEA THOUGH, I DO HAVE SOME MORE SHIMS FROM DAVE DODGE. DO YOU THINK ADDING THE 105 MAIN JETS WOULD BE TOO MUCH OR JUST TRY THE SHIM? I DID LOOK AT THE PLUGS LAST NIGHT AND THEY HAVE A LIGHT BROWN TO WHITE COLOR ON ELECTRODE . IT IS REAL STRONG ON LOW END, JUST WHEN IT GETS TO AROUND 4-5000 RPMS , IT TENDS TO "FLUTTER" IF THAT'S A WORD. AND THEN PULLS LIKE A JACK HAMMER AFTER 5500 RPMS. ... THANKS, LANCE
I do think the 105 jets with stock non modded exhaust will be too rich. The extra set of shims should fix ya up enough.
I added the extra shim to the needle this weekend. It now has a total of 3 shims and runs alot better. No more surging anymore... Thanks for the info guys...Lance
Just a reference point gents, but I am running 105 jets and extra shim with the stock filter and exhaust. I have no indications of running too rich, plugs look good, exhaust is not sooty, slight decel popping, performance is good. Do note though that I am only running 2.5 turns on the idle jets.
