Title: another electrical problem
Post by: Charles S Otwell on April 12, 2008, 10:53:30 PM
Well all this talk about electrical problems, must be like a virus of some kind. I had to replace my battery not  long ago but thought nothing of it because it was over due. I'll leave out all the wierd things that happen in between then and now  This morn we got ready to leave for a beautiful day of riding and the bike wouldn't start battery was weak, two trys and it was dead. I jump it off and figured a little riding would charge it back up, it didn't. I jumped it off again and road it even farther still dead, I stopped by McKinnon Yamaha and they put a voltage meter on it and it showed 10.02 to 10.05 nothing happened read the same at idle as it did at 3,000 rpm. On mech said probably stator or maybe rectifier, the other mech said since it didn't fluctuate when rev'd it was the stator. I've removed the stator , is there a test to determine which it is for sure? are do I just start replacing parts?

Thanks John, I should have already acquired a manual ,but haven't needed one up until know this will save me a lot of time , I hope I can find a good used stator, if that's the problem. I've already spotted several rectifier/regulators but no stators yet. Thanks again , I'll let ya'll know what I find..

How did the stator look?  Any signs of it being burnt or crispy?  Do you see any parts of the windings that are showing through the insulator?

From what I have seen on other bikes (still new to the magna) is that if the voltage is low part of the stator windings has gone bad, and if the voltage is high then the R/R has gone bad (and this will also boil the fluid in the battery causing your battery to go bad as well).

Just my $.02 from my expierence with my other bikes.  The Magna could be different though, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

I agree with DJ. If you read my posts about my problem, the RR was bad and the voltage meter always showed the charger running high. If you do not have a voltage meter to check while running a good way to tell if it is overcharging is to notice your high beam or turn signal indicators if they are overly bright. Also honk your horn at idle and then when at high Rpms. The horn will sound tinnier if it is overcharging.
Also, if it is the RR, don't buy a used one, go the extra bucks and get a new one from Denniskirk.com for around $100 and save the worry about if it is good.

Charles, check your email for the diagram from the manual.

Not another Electrical Prob.
I was gonna ask the question but you guys are the bomb, I'm a new member and glad I joined. reciently aquired a VF750C and first my battery went out everything seemed really bright after installing new batt. always smelled acid (due to boiling). Then Im going down the hiway at night and everything goes out and I smell burning plastic/rubber whatever. Scared the crap outa me and my 9 yr old daughter. So next day im looking for burnt wires and nada. Reached under the bat. comp. and I could see signes of something burnt. Smelled my fingers after touching it and it's exactly what I smelled the night before. The RR, and my battery box is broke (RT side) no idea how. So is that all I need to replace? Thanks much already for the 411.
