Title: Help, Exhaust pipe clamps to big
Post by: Jamtndll on April 29, 2008, 05:23:50 PM
I just got my new pipes today.  However, the mufflers I took off have a bigger shaft going onto the exhaust chamber than my new ones.  My clamps will not tighten up over the new pipes.  Suggestions please.  Can I get some cork and make me a cork gasket to tighten down on?

Jim, if you think a smoke trail would look cool, then by all means, try the cork. :) :)

I don't understand why the new pipes don't fit, but mine get really hot.  I don't think cork would last long.  I did not install mine, but they have a gasket of some sort that goes over the exhaust and inside the pipe.  They are black in color, but I don't know what the material is.  Maybe pieces are missing in yours??

Who knows?  I may be all wet.  Maybe mine are made of cork, but I don't think so.

The pipes fit fine.  The OD on the old pipes is larger than the new ones.  It is the clamp that will not tighten down all the way.  I was reading up on the cork thing after I posted and found out the same thing.  I think the gaskets are made from some type of asbestos. hehe
Talked to a friend of mine who has some old MC in his back yard said I could some tomorrow and browse and if I find some clamps that will work to just take them.
