Some of you know I mounted an aux gas tank (2-gal) on my luggage rack recently. Total weight of it, full, roughly 20 lbs. Well, this weekend on a 700-mile round trip, the luggage rack broke, leaving my tank (full of course) hanging by the hose. Not a good thing. Yes, yes, I know that was about double the weight limit claimed by the mfr. I had sorta hoped, though, that they were just covering their a$$ and it would actually hold more than they claimed. Fat chance! So if any of you have thoughts of carrying more than the mfr recommends, don't do it! I learn slow, but I learn good!
As a result, my next project is a billet luggage rack for myself which will actually carry some weight. Is anyone else interested in a rack which would be capable of carrying 30 to 50 lbs? I'm sure I can produce it for less than the Hondaline, Cobra or others currently on the market, which will only hold 5 to 10 lbs.

I know what you are talking about the maximum weight limit is ridiculous.
I have added supports for the end of the luggage rack that doubles as flag holders for when I run with the PGR.
It is not the most professional looking thing, like you would make but it works for me.

Yes! If it could be made strong enough to serve as a lifting point to get the bike up on the centerstand, that would clench the deal for me. If the rack could be designed to have an integral tank offering another gallon or so of fuel, so much the better. That might be a little too much to ask from a product liability stand-point, though. Maybe strap-down points for MSR or Primus aluminum fuel bottles?
I would once mine breaks but it's okay at the moment.
