Title: New chain
Post by: Magnum Magna on May 24, 2008, 01:03:21 AM
New chain

I normally try to maintain the Magna myself but during times of overtime I pay the stealer-ship to do some things. I will be taking it in for a new tire in June and I have a fear they will try to sale me a chain during the tire change.  With that said what is a good chain brand and dealer to get for a 3rd gen Magna ?

Under the FAQ Section.

Chains and Sprockets

Type- O-Ring is stock design
X Ring is the new design- suppose to contain oil longer w/less maintenance (marketing?-maybe, maybe not)

a. DID
b. RK
c. EK
d. a & b are the most widely used/popular

Are you in "around about way" saying You know you need a new chain?  :P :P  How many miles are on this one and why do you think they will push a sell?

I installed the DID X ring about 2000 miles ago.  I've checked it at regular intervals, but have only had to adjust it once about a 1/4 of a turn.  Not as expensive as I thought it would be compared to an OEM chain.

I changed my back tire out about 12000 miles back and when I put the new tire on it went to the back of the scale.  About 3000 miles back when taking up some slack it went out of the scale.
I keep the chain on the loose side of the range.

I adopted the Magna at 21,000 mile and it now has over 35,000 miles.  It could be the original chain or the second.

Mine always seem to loose their grease and kink up long before they go off the marked scale or run out of adjustment room, unless your chain has an extra link in it or yours is really stretched out.

I guess it is about time you part with a few greenbacks.

Where are you getting your chains from?

I will call Bates on Tuesday to see if they have 118/530 X-ring chains and there opinion on them.

Does the X-ring use the traditional O-ring spray lube in a can?

Yes.

Chains I have no place in particular, generally I search on the web and call around.

I bought my last o-ring chain and sprockets from Dennis Kirk.  With shipping I think I was about $35 below the honda shop.  I run with mine a little on the loose side also.

I know first gear is a weak part of the Magna but still considering going with the next size larger front sprocket.

Unless you just start and stop a couple times a day I would hang on to the old sprocket for a while until your sure.. I know it will increase your top speed a little, but I've never been comfortable over 115 mph and I could reach that with either sprocket size. With the larger front sprocket I was constantly down shifting to keep the rpm's up, and for slow starts in traffic I had to slip the clutch a lot. What I might have gained in highway mileage I more than lost in stop an go traffic. My average mpg didn't change with either size.

You are right.  I use the Magna more as a daily ride then trip.
