Title: Chrome polish
Post by: lragan on May 24, 2008, 05:58:34 PM
So I was cleaning up Ol Blue today getting ready for MOOTMAG, and worked to remove the burned on polyester from the left Cobra pipes.  {It gets there when I drag my riding britches across the pipes while fumbling for the sidestand with my heel.}  After much effort to no avail with various solvents and polishes, I got out my brass brush.  Knowing that chrome is much harder than brass, I figured the brush would not scratch the chrome -- WRONG -- I got the melted poly off the pipe, but now there is a dull finish in that area due to microscratches in the chrome.

Anyone know how to bring the chrome back to a high sheen? :???:

Maybe some of the techniques mentioned in thread #1848 about polishing out scratches? http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/forums/index.php?topic=1848.0 (http://www.magnaownersoftexas.com/forums/index.php?topic=1848.0)

I've tried getting scratched-up areas like that out of chrome and it just doesn't work.  Since chrome is just a coating, and a very thin one at that, even the smallest scratches are usually permanent.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  On a more positive note, I would recommend Mother's Chrome Polish.  It comes in a red plastic bottle and can be found at most automotive stores or shopping centers like Wal-Mart.  I have found it to be a very good product.  With Mother's Chrome Polish and a clean micro-fiber cloth, I have been able to get everything I have run into off of my chrome, including a vinyl bag that hit my pipe, wrapped itself around the pipe, and then proceeded to melt onto the pipe.  Mother's worked like a charm.  It also works very well for road tar and chain lube.  It does take quite a bit of elbow grease for some things, but the stuff will not harm the chrome at all, no matter how hard you rub.  I know this is too little, too late, but I hope it can help you in the future.
