Hi All. I'm Beau and I am the ober newb here. New to moot, motorcycles, magnas and all that comes with it. I took the rider safety course, obtained the M class endorsement then went on a first bike search. Thinking that if, heaven forbid (which it hasn't  ), I lay down the bike learning how to ride I'd rather it not be 7 to 10 grand. That's when I found a decent deal on an '83 magna, vf750c v45. Now I can't get enough. Being the kind of person that likes to tinker and figure out how things work: I'm in heaven. Slowly been going over all the systems learning fixing improving.... At first it was getting 38mpg now I'm getting 43. Rebuilt a few burnt connectors, new regulator, fixed a coolant leak at the water pipes etc .... Having exhausted the patience of the local parts/service departments I've turned to the net for more information. Which led me to find the wonderful people of MOOT.
I have run into a potential problem that I want to find a solution to before I'm faced with it. The rear brake drum is the hub of the rear wheel. Which means that when the drum wears beyond it's service life you have to buy a whole new wheel! That really peeve'd me to no end but what are you gonna do? buy the wheel. lol I have also learned that the wheel has been discontinued. I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this, what do I do when and if. Aftermarket manufacturer? Scrounge the yards for one with some life left in it? Modification to a different brake system? Disc? any ideas or thoughts?
Thanks in advance
Beauregard
Welcome to the Moot. I'm not a first gen'er but you have come to the right place to get help and ideas. I think the other Moot page (http://www.magnaownersoftexas.org/) talk about first gen oiling issues. I don't know if it includes your year or not. Check out http://www.magnaownersoftexas.org/tips.htm .
I have yet to see anyone come to the point where they needed a new wheel because of that!! I use my front brake 99 percent of the time so the rear brake sees little action but there again I have never seen anyone replace one either for that fact never heard of anyone turning one for new brakes either 8) 8)
Welcome to Moot! I've never heard of anyone needing a new wheel for brake reasons, but if you ever do need one there a lot of parts out there. here is one of several places to look for hard to find parts and accessories.
