My bike is getting harder to start in the mornings. I just about have to use the choke to some aspect every day. Once it warms up it starts the rest of the day. However, if I am riding downt the road at around 3500 to 4000 RPMs it seems that it is missing a little or flooding out. If I give it gas it immediatley picks up and takes off. I dont have this problem under 3k or above 5k. Once I get it started and if I want to take off as if I need to get out of someones way, she runs like a spotted ape. It is just when I am cruising. I have removed the stock pipes and put on some Jardines. ( about 500 miles ago) I changed the plugs. (about 250 miles ago) I have taken my plugs back out and looked at them and dont see any unusual wear. I also have aquired a right engine clatter. The clatter only happens as I am slowing down, It does not matter if the clutch is in or out. Just before I come to a complete stop it quits. I need to get these fixed as I am looking to sell and buy a V65. Thanks for you help.
Hey Jim, have you run a little Sea Foam thru it yet, the first gen guys like Silverado Cowboy can tell you a lot more but it never hurts to run a couple tanks with Sea Foam thru it in the mean time. Willie's Magna wouldn't start with out the choke anytime, he assumed that it was normal since it had done it as long as he had owned it. A couple of tanks later and he couldn't believe the difference, said he never had to use the choke to start it and it ran better than it ever had. Hope you figure it out.. By the way there is a V-65 for sale here in Texarkana I'll check it out and give you a shout if it looks like a good one.
I have run sea foam in it for the last 500 miles. Can you run too much? If you check out the V65 and it is worth it let me know.
Thanks,
Jim
Jim, did this issue show up about the time you switched mufflers? My guess is it is running a bit lean...
Shim the needles and a pilot jet adjustment will help a good amount.
Magnas have simple electronic ignitions. The timing is 15 degress BTDC and advances to 37 degrees BTDC. With a stock set-up the advance happens around 3500 RPM and is quiet smooth. However, with the aftermarket exhaust, the exhaust flow does not match the fuel flow. This situation causes a rough spot until the ignition fully advances. With sophisticated electronic ignition and fuel injection the advance mechanism does not jump 22 degrees. Adjusting the mixture is about all you can do, however, it will not completely solve the issue, but will smooth things out a little.
I now smell gas after I stop and sits for a few minutes. I can not see any gas on the ground or on motor. Could some of the gaskets be leaking? I do not mind taking the carbs off and cleaning them and rebuilding them, but since I have not done this before I would like someone who has to be near by. If anyone has the time to watch me and guide me I will come there. I will order the jet.shim kit form DD. They will make sure that I get everything I need or if someone know where I can get it less expensive let me know.
Thanks
