Title: Interceptor engine in a magna
Post by: kwale86 on August 08, 2008, 10:07:30 PM
Greg was talking bout a magna drag bike - here is an interesting engine swap that would add some HP
This guy used a 1997 VFR750 engine.

Or if this engine would swap, talk about a badass magna!

This engine is fuel injected, redlines at 11750 rpm, has vtec valve timing, and was dynoed at 99 horsepower, and has a 6 speed transmission.

The 6 speed trans will fit into the Magna engine case according to Dave Dodge.

I dont believe the airbox arrangement will fit the Magna frame though.  Engine mounts are probably different as well.

I saw that the other day Kale but failed to read the comments under the video. I though he was referring to the Interceptor motor that was detuned/retuned for the Magna.

Apparently it fits with the Magna heads.

Yeah if he put the Magna heads back on then it is just a Interceptor lowerend nothing much to gain there the sixth gear does nothing more than our five from what DD has said.

I posted this idea awhile back and Greg wisely pointed out the mounting issue.  I bought some carbs off of an 85 Interceptor and while the airbox it came with was way different, my box mounted to it no problem and the bike runs fine with them.
So, what is it about the Interceptor motor that makes more HP?  I have to assume better compression (pistons), cams and carbeuration.  If so, then those items should swap over pretty smoothly.  Again, I have not looked at numbers and such for parts, but daydream a lot about trying it out.
I keep threatening to tear my bike down and do a full restore with these kinds of mods, but I don't want to lose my saddle time.  As soon as I can afford (and talk wifey into it) a 2nd bike, that is my plan.

The interceptor motor is real close to the magna.   The interceptor has 2mm bigger carbs, and different cams for top end.  It screams to around 12000 rpm, and that is how it makes its higher horsepower. However, with these cams, it takes away the midrange torque that we come to love in our magna's. The magna has cams that "come in" at midrange and pull to redline.   :-D

Remember all those parts work with a better head design....  Swap out the heads and you are missing a major component that helps all those work together.
NOW if you have the carbs, cams, and have your Magna heads reworked to flow better then you will be able to utilize those other parts better.

If money was not a problem, I would love to have a super with a V65 in it.
