Alright guys. Went out to ride the bike today. Started right up, but when I tried to shift into gear, it stopped. Pulled in the clutch (left in gear) and it would not turn over.
Once shifted into nuetral, it starts just fine.
I pulled the two terminals from the clutch switch. When I take both of them, connect them and grounf them, it runs. As soon as I disconnect either one, it dies...
It must be the switch itself? Is there another switch in the gearbox?

Just brain storming: Could it be related to the sidestand kill switch. My situation acted a little differently but after cleaning the bike it became intermittent for me once.
To answer you last question packge33, there is a "neutral switch". This is what makes the green light on the triple tree light and let the system know when you are in gear. This switch is on the rear right side of the Oil pan (Opposite side of the kick stand close to the swing arm behind the exhaust, a little drain plug looking thing with a wire out the center).
So you have:
The Neutral switch
The Clutch switch at the handlebar
and the kickstand down switch.
Since you did not mention moving the kickstand when it died (assume it was already up when you shifted into gear), if the neutral light is going on and off on the dash, I would say it's the handlebar clutch switch...
BTW, my neutral switch was intermittant. I would pull up in my driveway, put the bike in neutral (green light on), let out the clutch, put down the kickstand, lean the bike over, the green light would begin to flicker, then the motor would die (because the bike thought the kickstand was down and the bike was in gear). I replaced the Neutral switch, and all has been good since.
I guess mine has been out for a while I have to shift into neutral to start her KS up or down just a slight inconvienence nothing more one day I guess I will fix it !
The kickstand is up when this happens...
When it is in nuetral, the green light lights up brightly. When it is in gear, and the clutch is pulled, the bike will not start at all.
It must be the switch in the clutch, correct?
By the way, Honda is VERY proud of their electrical connections/switches... It just cost me $55 to change the temp sending unit in the radiator. I can only imagine the price of this one from the stealership....

If I'm remembering correctly you can only start in gear with the clutch in AND the sidestand up, so it could actually be either switch - clutch or sidestand.

My 2001 will start with the kickstand down, clutch not touched, off the bike, as long as it is in neutral..(In other words)- I can stand to the right side of the bike and start it with just the start switch. As long as the neutral light is on.
In my short ride to the Driftwood Post Office today, I confirmed all these operations:
1) With bike in neutral, and kickstand down, it will start.
2) With bike in gear, clutch disengaged, and kickstand up, it will start.
3) With bike in gear, if you put the kickstand down, it dies.
4) With kickstand down, if you put the bike in gear, it dies.
I believe this is the way it is designed to work. :smile:
My guess is the clutch switch. Becasue everytime you in gear is when it won't start. So the computer is not getting the message that it is in neutral. My bike will start with kickstand down/up and in neutral, kickstand up/down while in gear with clutch disengaged, hell my bike will try and start in gear(forgot to pull clutch) Go with clutch switch, probably find one used on ebay. My bike is older so that could be a difference.

No need to play the guessing game on this one when it comes to buying parts. Just unplug each switch and test across the contacts with an ohm meter. Whichever one doesn't change state (open, closed) when you pull the clutch or put the sidestand up is your culprit.
