On Saturday, October 4, those who are willing will meet at 11:30 at The Salt Lick Restaurant, where we will have lunch:
www.saltlickbbq.com
After a modest repast on their most excellent barbecue (don't order desert!!) we will take a short, twisty ride to The Wimberley Pie Company:
www.wimberleypie.com
We will then proceed to enjoy some back roads in Hays and Blanco counties before going home. The route will depend on recent rainfall, as there are some low water crossings to consider. These are low speed, twisty paved roads through hilly ranch country. Some great views and fine riding.
Please indicate your intended participation by posting below.
Count me in. It's been a few years since I ate at the Salt Lick. I like the way they serve it family style.
Curtis
Curtis what time are you leaving? Are you going to come back Sat or you going to stay in the austin area Sat night?
I haven't planned out my route yet so I don't know what time specifically, but I know it will be early to get there by 11:30. I know last time I rode down there I went the scenic route around Lake Travis not counting on Saturday morning traffic and it cost a lot of time so I'll skip that this time. I'm planning on buzzing back right after lunch, or might hang with y'all for a few miles depending on what direction we end up heading. I've got solid church commitments so I don't want to get back home too late Saturday night. I'll post more when I get a specific route planned. Anyone from the Dallas area who wants to join me is welcome but this is going to be another one of those 400 mile days I imagine.
Curtis
edit: I just looked at one of my old routes to the Salt Lick and at best it's 227 miles one way. This could easily turn into a 500 mile plus day so anyone considering joining me be forewarned.
final edit: The routes are finalized and it will be just a tad over 300 miles down there. It will be very close to that, maybe even more coming back depending on the route we choose (I have three options planned). Looking like a 600 mile plus day now! You were warned.
274 miles from my house avoiding major hwys. 5 1/2 hour trip down. I have to think about if I will be coming back Sat. Let me know your route to see if I Can meet up with you guys somewhere south.
If I know my routing it will be an 8 hour trip! LOL If I have to stick to straight highways and the super-slab, I'd almost as soon not go.
Curtis
565 miles from lowell to driftwood.. 9 hours, 8 minutes.. Count me out.. :( :(
Well, at least the 'Horns are playing away Oct. 4, so you won't have to deal with game traffic!!
As much as we'd like to see everyone, we don't want you to knock yourselves out. Just let me know as you decide what to do.
Unless it rains us out, the meal/ride will take place -- even if I am the only one! Like Tigger, I suppose.... 8)
Lawrence,
I committed to the ride in the old thread; I'm still planning to make it.
Rick Frankenberger
Ok, I've got my route planned. 305 miles there, 315 miles back..........looks like 14 or 15 hours saddle time. The ride out will stay west of I-35 once we get south of Hillsboro and will include a run through Inks Lake State Park. The ride back will stay east of I-35 mostly, and include some of the roads we rode on the ill fated fried bacon run (that turned into a Mexia run).
Anyone who wants to join me meet in DeSoto at the Chevron on the west side of I-35E and Pleasant Run at 5:00 A.M. KSU at 5:15 and I wait for no one. That should put us in Driftwood around 11 or so. I'll have to skip desert to get back home around 9:00 P.M. or so.
Curtis
I'll give this one a shot.
Jim: I'll probably stay overnight.
Curtis: Please forward or post your route.
Here's the route down. http://mysite.verizon.net/res184gd/tripplans/id6.html (http://mysite.verizon.net/res184gd/tripplans/id6.html) I'm not going to post the route back, because I'm keeping my options open and will decide along with anyone riding back with me what type of ride home we prefer (options will be another "Curtis" route, State Highways or the SuperSlab).
This is a 620 mile round trip and will be my third longest lunch ride. The longest was a 900 mile day in a two day ride for lunch in Presidio, TX. Second is a 700 mile day to "May's On The Bayou" in LaBelle, then on to Port Arthur to pick up some hand made boudin and hog head cheese to bring back. These were purely "lunch runs" for no other purpose. I don't count the many great lunches from Key West to Yellowstone that were part of a trip. Maybe we should start an "epic lunch" thread! LOL
Note that there are two meeting places: 4:00 A.M. at Dalrock and I-30 in Rowlett and 5:00 A.M. at Pleasant Run and I-35E in Desoto.

With riding temperatures getting down where they need to be, no baiting is necessary. There will only be a short window of good weekend riding times on Saturdays before the bad weather sets in as everyone knows.

Why do these kinda rides always happen the week I'm on call

Anyone from the Houston area making this lunch?
I am putting in my request. Sounds like fun, especially the 'spirited ride' tag that Curtis put on it. Up, Up and away!!!!!!!!!

That's great news, Bob. I'm looking forward to it. Just remember you'll be riding with a bunch of "big, slow" Valkyries! ha ha ha!!!!
Curtis
Big, yes, slow, no way!!!!
I will follow you anywhere, Curtis, less bugs!! LOL
I am trying to gather a group from Frisco area to join, following your route, and if enough come may stagger the time a bit so we do not have a long group if that is okay.
Bob, if you want the Garmin file (route down, couple of options back) or the MS Streets and Trips file (route down only) let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.
Curtis
Not going to make this one. Having knee surgery Friday. 3 weeks off bike drs orders. We'll see about that.
Sorry you have to resort to surgery, but hope it's the ticket to get you back to where you want to be. Good luck. I'll eat an extra rib in your honor!
Curtis
Sounds good Curtis, I will take whatever you have for directions, I prefer line by line, turn to turn. I can map it out.
Thanks.
Surgery went well this morning. I am back home resting. Hopefully I will be backriding in the next couple of weeks.
Good to hear Jim... Thanx for letting us know...
Good news, indeed.
Glad to hear it.
Great news hope to see you in the saddle soon!!!

Help, I need a bigger garage.
I flew down to Corpus Christi a couple of weeks ago, looked it over, paid the man and rode it back that night. I got in DeSoto at 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning. It was a fun adventure on a really awesome piece of equipment.
This bike needs a lot of polishing and some smaller items will need to be replaced (mirrors, misc. fasteners) due to gulf coast weather corrosion. I have been systematically changing all the fluids and checking maintenance items in preparation for the ride.
I am ready. Let's Roll!!!
Sweeeeeet Valk!!! What you need now is a Car Tire!!! See Curtis for all the facts and enthusiasm necessary...
Congrats on the new to you bike! That sounds like a nice project. Will you be riding it this weekend?
I might actually get to make this ride, I found someone to take my call this weekend!
Have another potential thing that might keep me, but will see.....
Good luck Greg, hope you get to make it.

It is my plan to ride the Valk on this one. I hope to get through this one without any problems. My record on our big rides is not so good regarding mishaps.
In regards to the rear car tire, the previous owner just put new Avon Venoms on the bike, so it will be a while before the cager tire subject is approached. In the meantime, I'll just have to follow Curtis and watch his go round and round.

Gee Greg, don't you think you could put off washing the ferret until Sunday???
That sounds like a lot of big bikes in front to catch the bugs.
BTW, Nha will be coming on his Super and my friend Don on his souped up Harley will be coming along.
I am hungry!!!!
Naaa Bob, more lights up front to attract them so you can run through them!
Curtis
Well, guys, it looks like we will have great weather. It hasn't rained in forever, so we can pretty much ride whatever we like in the back country.
Just a reminder -- bring your appetite and your CASH -- Salt Lick doesn't take American Express -- or VISA, or MasterCard, or... well you get the idea. There is a cash machine on site, but the fees are ridiculous, and it is often out of order.
Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday morning.
Lawrence
Surprise, I had planned to go on this but didn't commit until we were closer.
Now that we are closer, as you can see in another post I am having my motor media blasted this weekend and hope to paint the engine cases. Nothing wild, just back to stock unless I hear a good suggestion. I have considered doing black fins but I don't know if I can wipe off the outside edges evenly.
I will be tied up and not going, maybe I can have one back together for a short ride Sunday.
Well here it is, time for the ride and my knee is still swollen. I can bend it and can sit on bike. But if she ever started over to the right she would go all the way down. I still can not put full weight on that knee. So I will not make this one. Maybe the next one.
You guys have a good time and someone eat some for me.
Someone swing by and bring Jim some Pie!!!
Jim, sorry to hear ya wont make the ride... I will eat some pie for ya! I GET TO GO! WHOOO HOOOO!
All-Right !
Look forward ta seeing ya there.
Are you meeting at the Pleasant Road stop ?
For those of you with CB radios I'll be hanging out on channel 5.
Curtis
Ok guys, I'm in on this one. Luckily I didn't have too much planned for tonight. I'd like to catch you guys in Burnet. Curtis can you give me a call or tell me about when you'll will be hitting Burnet? 214 577 2342
Devin, tried to call but it said your voice mail is not set up. Quit talking to the pretty girls for a minute so I can call you!! :P
My Garmin says we'll be there at 10:00 but that far out it's hard to pin down since our pace could vary quite a bit. I'd say it could be anywhere from 9:00 to 10:30 but probably closer to the earlier number. How long would it take you to get to Burnet? We could call you when we get to the last gas stop before Burnet and you might be able to minimize your wait time. Play it safe though, because my policy on unscheduled rendezvous (especially 5 hours into the route) is that if we don't see you and you don't catch us, we keep riding through. Your only option then would be to ride on to Driftwood alone. Let me know what you think. I'll check this message before I go to bed and before I leave in the morning.
Curtis
P.S. We'll be coming into Burnet from the east on 963 and go south on 281 for a few blocks before heading out west on 29.
Curtis, what is your route past me towards Desoto? I could drop inline as ya come by???
Greg
Curtis posted his route here :
http://mysite.verizon.net/res184gd/tripplans/id6.html
What doesnt show is Rowlette to Desoto which will run down 635--->20---35
right past 175 and your neck of the woods
I'll be meeting Curtis at around 4am [ugh] at Rowlette KSU at 4:15 so expect about would pass your way 20 mins around 4:35 give or take some
Do you want us to call you when KSU at Rowlette?
You could pick us up at 175 / 635 like you did that one time. I'm going superslab to DeSoto. We should be coming through around 4:30 to 4:45. Channel 5 on CB.
Curtis
OKIE DOKIE! I will be there....
IF I remember to wake up LoL!!!
I put the wrong number haha. 214 577 2432. Ok, I'll see what time I wake up, if it's around 9, I'll try and meet yall in Burnet. If not look for me at the Salt Lick at 11.
A great ride happened today. I enjoyed the company of each and every one of you immensely. The Dallas contingent consisted of Bob and his friend Don, Greg C. and Greg O., Dave S. and myself.
Coyote, deer, skunk, raccoon, possum, ring-tail cat, hawk.................well, you get the idea! We did some off-roading (on purpose) and Greg showed us how a Valk can turn 180* in it's own length. We rode half of Inks Lake State Park twice. We didn't make it to the Salt Lick but we did eat with Devin, Lawrence and ?? (dangit I'm tired, ok?). I made almost the whole route before my first U-turn and then it was a whole ten minutes before the next one. Stay tuned to future posts in this thread to see how all of these puzzle pieces fit together!!

The ?? was Rick Frankenberger -- hails from San Antonio. When you guys headed back north, and Devin went back to school to study, Rick and I rode out 1431 to Marble Falls for some pie. On the way home down 962, rode through a flock of wild turkeys, so you can add those to the list...
Was great to see you guys. We still need to go the The Salt Lick...

Thanks for reminding me Rick's name. Was great to see you folks too. I loved your stories, especially the air bag jacket in the river! We still have an appointment with the Salt Lick and Inks Lake State park. We only went 1/3 of the way in before Don's tire got his attention. We'll definately do this ride again. Let's do it when the days start lengthening again and make it a 12:30 lunch. I felt bad making my guys ride curvey back roads whilst dodging wildlife, and not seeing the scenery to boot! Seriously though, we had a great time...........thanks for calling this lunch!!
Curtis
P.S. Bluebonnet Cafe? We didn't find any pie so we had to settle for a Blizzard at DQ.
Yes, the Bluebonnet Cafe. Pecan pie. Rick had ice cream on his. MMMMmmmmmmm!!!!
Here are a few pics I took at the lunch spot.
1) Rick, Greg C., Devin, Greg O.
2) Dave and his new Valk
3) Bikes parked for lunch
4) Curtis' Valk --note the sophisticated hydration system!!
Thanks to you guys for coming south. Maybe we can pick a spot nearer the geographic center soon.
I am with you on the longer days -- it is just that October is usually my favorite month for outdoor activities of any sort -- cool mornings, warm afternoons, not as much wind as spring time.

HEY!!!! I've traveled really far for both a chocolate meringue pie and a lemon meringue pie. I'm not saying that they are any better than key lime, apple or choclate pecan but I am saying that meringue has a place in this world. My sister and I have the "cow slobber" arguement everytime I stop at the Chappel Hill Exxon to pick up my meringue pie of choice to go. That said I must here by vote PRO-MERINGUE!!
Got to go now... i'm hungry!
QuoteGot to go now... i'm hungry!
Yep, you just reminded me of the pumpkin pie in the fridge that son's GF made. I'll be back later!
Curtis
OK theres a place here in East Texas that makes pecan cobbler. It is to die for. It is at a all you can eat fish place on Lake Fork. Have to set up a ride there one day.
Jim, I'm thinking about bringing a ride out to the Shed in Edom this Saturday if I can work out the details. Right in your back door! I'll post a separate thread, so keep your eyes open for details.
Curtis
That sounds great to me. I will be there for sure. That is only 12 miles from my house.
