Title: HEAVY-DUTY LUGGAGE RACK - FINALLY
Post by: Magniac on October 09, 2008, 07:31:17 PM
I finally picked up from my machinist the finalized version prototype rack I've been working on. Production is beginning as I type this. Should have the first batch by the end of next week. I'll take pics this weekend and get posted to my site by Monday or Tuesday. http://www.cycle-istic.com
All the OEM and aftermarket racks I could find are rated to carry very little weight, from 6 to 10 lbs., and are constructed from very thin-wall tubing. My rack is made from solid billet, and should have no trouble carrying 30-40 lbs or more. Price will be determined once the first batch is underway, depending on actual machining time. We already know the material cost. It should be less, but at least no more than the Hondaline rack, which is rated for less than 10 lbs. I think 3 to 4 times the capacity for the same or less price is a pretty good deal.

Couldn't find a listing for the Magna any more, but hondaparts-direct.com has them for the 750 Shadows, both Spirit and Aero, which appears to be the same rack as for the Magna, for $126.

Note to Greg Cothern: Greg, Do we have an option for the emoticons including the guy bashing his head against a brick wall like they have on the Adventure Riders forum? Better yet, the guy who is purple in the face and throwing a tantrum would work right about now.

Speaking of heavy duty luggage racks, the problem I have with mine is that the rack is level and the backrest is angled so anything I strap on the rack usually ends up with all the weight on the very back edge of the rack. I can see how it wouldn't hold much weight. It may not look as good but I'm going to change the angle of the rack so it is 90 degrees with the back rest. I keep a leather pack on the bike all the time and I don't think it will look any worse than the big gap that is under the bag now. Anyone else's rack fit this way?

I bought this one off ebay a while back. its worked great for me.

One thing I would like to see Cycle-istiC make would be some nice "P" brackets for mounting extra lights.
I'll draw up a design an stick it up on the site.

the problem with racks like that is they are mainly for looks. i'm sure that has a less useable weight rating than the hondaline one i have, that broke for Dobie when he had his aux gas tank on it. I think the hondaline one says not to put more than 6 to 10 lbs on it.

Kuryakyn makes a pretty good assortment of "p" clamps.

I think Charles is right. After looking at the same rack an installed on a 750 Shadow Spirit, it was hard to miss that you would not be able to put much of anything on it and have it sit evenly across the rack. As it is, the majority of the weight of any large cargo is going to be concentrated near the rear edge, where it has maximum leverage to work against the mounting points. Well, I have one rack that I put a couple of scratches in while assembling. They can be polished out, but I really don't want to mess with it. If someone wants it, I will sell for $99 (normal $114.95). First come, first serve.
