how are you computing the gas mileage?

Are you judging it off a "gas light"?

My gas light is very sensitive.  It'll come on at 80 miles, but I can go to about 150 miles before I need to fill up.

Do you have a reserve?

How are you hitting that throttle?

If I ram it constantly, my mpg drops to about 35, if i nurse it, I can maintain 50/51 mpg!

Have your valves been adjusted? Carbs cleaned/rebuilt?  How's compression?

i dont go by the light, i figure it by how many miles i have been and how much fuel it takes to refill, as far as the trottle, i try to baby it, keeping under 70mph, not hitting the trottle hard, carbs have just been cleaned, rebuilt, and syncronized, compression, is good. one thing,, this bike is a california bike, i have taken the charcoal canister off and plugged the lines, that might have something to do with it i dont know..

Yeah.  I personally don't have a v65 but our bikes are very similar.  Hopefully, a more wiser member can lend more assistance.

I just now when I hit it hard ...i average like 40 mpg...but if I always kick it into the highest gear, and never use my brakes....i hit 50mpg +

Got some place you can take it out and blow the soot out of it? A little Sea Foam a couple of hours of hard riding, getting the rpms up in the 7 to 9 K range as often as you can will do wonders.. Mine runs like a sick calf if all I do is ease around town and never get the rpms up, I try to get mine out on the superslab occasionally just to blow the cobb webs out, I ride a 3rd gen 750, and the V-65's are built for higher speeds than mine. I usually average about 50 mpg. Hope you get your problem solved ..

I am riding a 1986 V65 and check the mileage every tank and it ranges from the low 40's to as high as 50.  I average mid 40's.  I ride it work which is 40 miles each way with some city driving included.  I don't baby it through the gears and on the highway stretch speed is 70 plus mph just keeping up with the traffic.  I have read that these bikes were made for the higher rpms.  Mine runs smother above 4000 rpms.  Also mine is not the Calif. model.  I have a KN filter use reg gas sometimes plus and my exhaust has no baffles in them. Just my 2 cents worth.
