Title: Crankcase bolt oil leak
Post by: Greg Cothern on October 25, 2008, 05:32:39 PM
So I found an oil leak on the Project 96.....  It was coming from the right rear crankcase bolt.  (Manual 11-19)  If you kneel down beside your 3rd gen and look at your oil filler cap, then look just past it under the faux air fins you will see a black bolt, this is the culprit.
It was loose.......NOW comes the million dollar question......HOW did it get loose?  Why is it loose?  All others are tight.....

I tightened it down and cleaned the area and will wait to see if it loosens again.

Is there any chance the po (at some point) over torqued the bolt  ? That can stretch the threads in the Aluminum block and cause the bolt to vibrate loose. I would clean the bolt and go ahead and put some blue loctite on it now and releave myself of the worry about it happening again. That or go ahead and get yourself a Harley emblem for it  :D :D :D..

Hey Greg, I know oil leaks are stressful and the jokes everyone slings around are hurtful so in light of all that I would be willing to take the 96' magna off your hands free of charge.    :P

If this is the bolt I think it is, what does it do? It doesn't seem to hold two cases together, or a cover on, so what does it hold, attach, etc???
