Title: HELP oil leak
Post by: p.rogers on November 03, 2008, 12:01:22 AM
I know this problem has been discussed before.  I am losing too much oil from the alternator area.  I know that there is suppose to be oil in this area, however i am throwing oil really bad from behind the stator and cannot find in the manual what i need to order to replace. Is it a bearing (sealed) or a O'ring that needs to be replaced?  if anyone knows the part # as well i would love to know it.  If you know the parts manual area and location in the manual i would be indebted.

If you pull the cover behind where the stator is. Is there oil here if so this is where your shift shaft comes out  there is a seal there and that could be leaking other than that can you describe where the oil is coming from?

How do you know you are "losing too much oil"? Is it leaking to the outside?

I take it you are talking about the 84 Magna, correct?

I have noticed some residue around the outside of my stator housing as well.  At first I thought it was from the clutch bleed valve, as I had flushed it awhile back, but have since decided it is coming around the stator cover.  Now, one of the bolts on mine is broken off and I assumed that to be the culprit for the leak and that it was not unusual for there to be SOME oil in the stator area.  Is this not so, should it be completely dry??

The stator or altenator whatever ya want to call it is somewhat bathed in oil so yes oil is supposed to be in there as far as a leak well a new gasket should fix you up..

I would buy the appropriate "easy out" screw extractor and make every effort to remove the busted bolt.  That may have nothing to do with your leak, but busted bolts left in their holes are my all time, #1,  top of the list, pet peeve -- I hate 'em.  They just sit there as a permanent insult to by abilities!!
