Note there were several entries that listed "About 15K" etc.. With these there were two possible categories, so I split them between categories as evenly as possible.

Seems to me, IF you have a 1994 and have between 10K & 20K miles You are more likely to have a Regulator failure, but equal possible failure of High voltage or Low voltage.

Justin

1994

62,335 Km = 38,733 Mi

Westcoast of Canada, Victoria, British Columbia

Stopcharge-undercharge was only putting out 12V at 3000 RPM

Stock

I also measured the resistances between the wire pairs

With the +Probe on the Red/White wire and the -Probe used to test the other wires

- all wire pairs read Open Circuit

With the +Probe on the Green wire and the -Probe used to test the other wires

Red/White = Open Circuit
Yellow(Bottom) = 1773 Mega Ohms
Yellow(Right) = 1773 Mega Ohms
Yellow(Left) = 100-200 Ohms

The yellow wires resistance was also tested, between Yellow(bottom) and Yellow(Left) 1773 Mega ohms was measured, all other probe/yellow wire combination resulted in a open circuit reading.

The orientation for the yellow wires is based on the user looking at the blades inside the connector with the push tab facing upwards see page 15-8 of the honda service manual.

The digital multilmeter used to perform the testing is a FLUKE 179

Terry - I made up these charts, I don't know if it helps to understand the trends or not.. Fell free to copy and past the link near the beginning of the thread if you wish

Hoot, the histograms are interesting.  I normally switch the axes, so the number of failures is in the vertical.  Don't know why, but it seems to be standard practice in the electronics industry, at least.

It's been a while since I did any charts (being unemployed), so it was more just an exercise for me.. I tried to do Pie charts, and I couldn't get it to come out with the labels, so I went with Bar charts..
Yes, most of the bar charts I've done in the past  have been on the vertical as you say, but I think it's understandable the way it is..
The one thing that doesn't come out is that I had a NON-Stock Regulator fail and that's in the chart too, but I think I'm the only LUCKY one with that, so I don't think it skews the data too much..

Chris, actually the one on the Yellow bike was a replacement as I pulled it and let a MOOT'ster use it as his died at MOOTMag and then my stock unit died on his way home.  IF MEMORY serves me correct.

Might as well add mine here

Name - Jimmy Glover (Gloveberg)

Year of bike - 1996

Approx. milage - 115K (give or take)

Location - Bronte, Tx

OC or SC - Stopped charging. No warning signs, just stopped charging the battery.  Used a volt meter on the battery terminals and at any rpm it just read battery voltage, no increase ever with added rpm's. Used the troubleshooting chart in the service manual and across the yellow leads from the regulator it read open, no resistance reading.

Accs watts - None

**Replaced unit with an aftermarket regulator from RegulatorRectifier.com.  Supposedly from the same place that Honda sources their units from but it's around $60 cheaper than the lowest place I found for a Honda replacement from RonAyers.com ($106 vs $166)

At first I thought the battery was just old. So bought a new one an installed it. About 5 days later the battery was dead once again. Got the bike home and put a voltage meter on it. All it was showing was the amount of power in the battery. No matter what rpm's. Presently I'm wait for the part to come in.
