Sorry for the late notice, with my brother Kelly getting his Magna we need to do jet and shims the carbs etc. So I am off call this next coming weekend so here we GO!
Open the garage door at 0900 and close whenever we are finished! Come to work, or to watch, JUST COME!
I have a question. I drilled my pipes this weekend. However, it may be my imagination, but it seems that I have some hestiation now when I take off. But once it smooths out it seems to have have a little more getty up. This only happens when I am really getting on it. Is this my imagination or could this have happened since drilling my pipes. Do I need to jet and shim carbs?
Opening up the endplates by drilling will certainly make them flow more, thus making it run leaner.
Do you know what the previous owner has done in the way of changes to the carbs? Air filter?
ALL 3rd Gen Magna's benefit from shims even it its 100% stock from nose to tail!

Correct amundo!!
I jetted and shimmed my stock setup and it Stilled has mid-range issues. I had 1 stock and 1 drilled with K & N, shimmed & jetted granted I didn't ride them much but didn't notice a difference. Maybe with more riding I could have but midrange is an issue on both.
When you do something on your bike you also start paying attention, it was there before.
Where can I get jets and shimms before Saturday?

Steal them from a friends bike and
RUN!
If you call DD you will most likely have them by Friday...IF you have him mail them Tuesday. If your mail runs slow, ship them to Gregs.
At the last minute I found a Honda dealer (Al Lambs) scrounged in the service area and located 4 for me, a Honda dealer might be able to have them also. This will need to happen on Tuesday morning.
Either way, your pushing it.
Got the kit ordered from DD tonight. They were still there. He said that i should have it by Thursday or Friday at latest. The only thing he did not have was the 3" tool used to adjust the D shaped screws. I figured as many of these as has been done someone there will have one of these. See you guys Saturday. Greg what do I need to bring?
\
Can you post the location? I have to come pick up my parts bike from Bob Barram next weekend, so I might as well come harass you guys for awhile since I will be in the Big D.
Sent you an email with directions...

Bring that keg you have filled with koolaid!
I'll be there. just to hang out, help ect.
Let folks look and try out the darkside magna.
I need to change the front sprocket and chain though. may see if I can round up the parts in time.
Any place a good place to get these?
Can also talk about my Magna audio project that i'm close to getting the prototype built.
Looks like my trip to pick up the parts bike will be on Sunday, too much to do Saturday. I will have to make one of these, or host one I guess, so I can get you guys to come work on my bike for free!
I am planning on a full frame off restoration on the "parts" bike I just got, so I should have plenty of projects for the next 6 mos. or so.
since Allen decided to work and not come up, will he still make good on the "lunch"? :D
Can you send me the location also. I think I just might boogy up that way in the morning.
Ray MOOT #302
Ray sent you an email reply with directions.
Look forward to seeing you!
My daughter is flying in from Florida in the morning to visit for a week. Ya'll have fun, sorry I have to miss this one especially since I haven't seen Ray in a year or more!
Curtis
Yeah and I am stuck on a boat in Corpus sure would have been fun have a great Day everyone!!!!
I am up and ready to open the doors!
You guys have a great time, and don't work too hard. :P I'm stuck at work until 3pm today. Oh, and it is 37 degrees outside!! I hope to get to one of these sessions someday, and get help on new front fork springs!! :-D
Tell me when you want to do it and I will be ready!
Had a good turnout even if the weather tried to keep folks away with its cold!
My brother Kelly was the first to arrive, then Jim Tindall, followed by Lee Junot (she is a coworker whom just bought a Rebel 250), Ray Johnson from the coastal region, Greg Oehler & wife, Jim Turner, Len Avert, and Dave Shireman.
We tackled 2 carb jets/shims and then lunch at The Cottin Gin! I got to ride Len's DarkSide equipped Magna....The car tire is pretty neat!
So did ya wake Kellys bike up a little for him!!!
Yeah we jetted and shimed the carbs, he traded his K&N air filter to Jim for his stock unit. I did not get a chance to ride it, but hope too soon for comparisons sake.
I did get some seat time on a mostly stock Magna vs the Project 96 and could tell a good difference in throttle response and acceleration.
1) Wrench session in progress
2) Greg Cothern and Jerry Turner with Lee's Honda Rebel
3) Kelly Cothern in carb class
4) Jim Tindell in carb class
Another great day for a get together albeit a little on the cool/breezy side in the morning.
Thanks again Kristi and Greg for opening your home up to us all.

Greg;
Any chance we could be a little more verbose on this subject??
Is there enough time and enough tools to do triple tree bearings at the next session? Since I have never done these bearing I'm not sur what it takes. I've got head shake upon 45mph decel.

With your hands on the bars or off?
Check your tire pressure or your tire for cupping!!!

Does not matter, air pressure is perfect 32 psi no cupping. This is where I'm getting my info.

This a V65 Ok well on my 3rd gen if the tire pressure got below 32 or so it would shake upping the pressure to 38 where it is supposed to be solved my problem. If you are going to do the Ttree bearing I would find tapered roller bearings instead of the stock ball and race setup !!!
it's now awake Allen! pulls alot better in 2nd gear, thats for sure.

What? :?:
I don't understand.
yes it's true, the low end is much better now.
They did his Jets at the wrench session this forum is for !!!
QuoteWhat?
Jumbobret, I would HIGHLY suspect the tire before I would the steering head bearings. 99% of the times in the past it has been the tire.
What brand of tires are you running?
Greg I have had no more hesitation since we first fired her up after work. I am however having a hard time keeping her under 75. She wants to run wild with me. I also have not had to use my choke to start. I can certainly tell the difference. Thanks for opening your home and guiding me through this.
Jim, I forgot to mention that the jet/shim kit would have 1 side effect....
Throttle-itis!
My home is always open to MOOT'sters!
Jim, didn't you also put in 105 main jets?
Yes

Dunlops 440? 404? I can't remember I didn't not ride in today.
Jim, did you feel that it helped out especially on the lower end?
The bike ran well before, but after it seems to have just picked up energy. I was having some hestiation on acceleration before but now it just takes off and says "hang on" To answer your question yes it helped.
cool. worth the cold ride, wind and everything!
