Title: DynoJet kit + Project 96
Post by: Greg Cothern on November 28, 2008, 08:10:39 AM
Since getting the Project 96 up and running and legal I have been playing around with the carb tuning.  I had put on a set of SuperTrapp mufflers which flow very well..  It has a stock air filter, and a DynoJet kit, with stock 40 idle jets.
With the needle clip in the middle and 1 shim it was lean in the mid range quite a bit.  Also I currently have all the diffuser disc end plates installed.
Throttle response was very crisp and strong pull, however mid range had a big sag, and had quite a bit of decel pop!
So I changed the needle clip to the bottom position raising the needle all the way up.  Mid range improved quite a bit, however low end is a bit strange now...  Try and hold it steady 3k rpm (or any lower rpm) and it has a bit of a on off response, not quite a surge but one could call it that for argument sake.  Decel pop is still there but not gone and I would call it moderate.
I am thinking a idle jet increase to a 42 should get it about right on the bottom through mid range without hurting the crisp throttle response.  I think I may have to put the needle clip up one notch to lower the needle a tad with the bigger idle jets.  I did not pull the carbs this time so I do not remember my current pilot jet (D shaped jet) turns out.  I think they are 3, guess I will have to start writing this stuff down LoL.
I guess I could set my sights on getting it rich across the board and go with a K&N.
On a side note I am seriously thinking of sending out my extra set of heads and cams assembly to Dave Dodge to have them worked for stage 2 or more..........

An update....

So with the clip now in the richest position with the stock air filter and stock 40 idle jets, it is HORRIBLY rich in the midrange, GO FIGURE!!???     However it still has decel pop  so I am going to move the needle clip leaning it back to the 3rd (middle position) and change out the idle jets to 45's (I would prefer 42's but have the 45's handy) and order in an K&N filter.  I think with the pilot screws adjusted to around 2 1/2 turns out I should be OK on the bottom end.

Stay tuned for the next installment of DYNOJET TUNING!

OK another update:

Started pulling seat and tank when I noticed that the fuel line coming off the petcock had a cut that was about 40% of the diameter.

I trimmed the end and reinstalled tank and seat and took it for another test run of a couple miles.  Decel popping was conisiderably less.  Before I called it moderate to high, now I would call it low moderate.   The midrange is still overly rich and stumbles.

SO with this new info, I decided to pull the fuel needles and move the e-clip to the 3rd position from the bottom (when I started it was 3rd from the top of the 6 positions), so 2 up from the first adjustment.

Now it has low moderate decel pop, but midrange is much improved.  So the plan now is to continue to ride it at these adjustments and wait for the K&N to arrive.  See where it sits after the K&N and go from there.

another response:

Allen do you have some of those inserts that you could drill a hole all way thru then Greg can install on his new pipes then you can insert the sniffer?

Part of choice?  That does not sound fair.  You should just get to drill their endplates, that is as close to equal as you get.

I was just asking if Allen had any spares that he could drill a hole in where u could put the sniffer.  But I am great w/a drill and hammer!!

LoL.

If I drill the endplate to insert the sniffer then I change the back pressure of the mufflers....

I will just have to go it the old fashion way and read the plugs and use the BUTT DYNO for the mixture guessing.

Still interested in the HP and Torque #'s.

Quotesounds like some folks need to throw in their vote.
Vote on what?  Whether he should drill or not?  Boy, this post got sidetracked didn't it?
Now back to our feature...  Greg's progress on the Dynojet kit!

yeah it did, but vote on the dyno as to whether or not anyone is interested so he can secure the deal.

Greg, I have updated the Carb Tuning thread with your latest adjustments. I think I have them correct.
