Thinking about putting together a wrench session for either late December, early January. I have an 84 V65 Magna that I would like to do a valve adjustment on (first time for me), and fellow member JumboBret would like to do the steering head bearings in his 84 V65 Magna! Location is still undecided, can either be at my place in McKinney, or at Dave Shireman's place (SmokedU) in DeSoto, or maybe somebody else would like to host with a heated garage? :D The possible dates are either December 20th, or December 27th. Depending on everyone's holiday schedule, we may have to push this out into January, but would like to put out a feeler to gauge interest! Anybody else have a winter project just waiting to be tackled? Let's hear about it!!!!!
Well I planned on heading up to Gregs house for the weekend of Jan 9th so maybe we could impose on him to hold one I am sure he is up for it LOL never seen him turn a wrench session down yet. Santa will have dropped all the Toys off for all us MOOTsters and we will have to put them on. So if Greg chimes in it is Ok then how does the January 10th sound !!
That date is fine with me, let's see what Greg has to say!!!
sounds good.
I have to work Dec 27 & Jan 17. I want to be there.
Well I did not see the 10th in there so you should make IT
Sure, come on over!

Should I pay the Queen a $ tribute to have coffee in supply?
Let's just hope it's warm!! Whose the resident valve adjustment expert??? I can get the valve covers off, but after that............
I am sure we can get it done have done a few so not new for sure!!!!!
So is this going to be on the 10th?
Of January !!!! Yep

I assume this is on your V65? If so, I am sure going to try and make it up there for that. Wouldn't mind hauling my V45 up there and trying to do it as well.
Also, I am buying a used tire removal/replacement tool this week. If anyone down my way ever has a need just shout. It is likely not as nice as Terry's though. I am buying it and a rolling chassis (yes another) this next week. Already made the deal with the guy, just gotta get the last project/parts bike off my trailer and go pick this one up. $100 for the chassis. Has almost everything but the gas tank and a few odds and ends.
Yes, have some upper end noise that tends to come and go in my 84 V65 Magna, so I figured I would start with the valves first, bike has just over 20K miles, bet it's never been done before. Looking forwarding to meeting everyone on the 10th!!!!
you B having alot of bikes, cool
Looks like January 10th is a go for everyone, Greg, can you post your address so I know how to get there? Hopefully, it will be warm enough to ride, if not, I will just trailer my bike over! Thanks again for hosting this!!!!
Ok just wanted to throw a reminder to everyone about this Wrench session if you have any presents left over I will take them then LOL.... Someone else will be getting one then too but you will have to show up too see what it is!!!!!

Well, Allen, you now have me intrigued! I can't think of any work I want to do to my bike, but I may have to come for the surprise!!
Cannot sya anymore than that because someone can get there hands on anything on this forum nothing is safe
i have this info from a good source, Allen is purchasing mistletoe and taping it on the bill of his cap, so i'm sure this is of a huge surprise to some!!
Nah it will be on the back belt loop for some      Ok everyone don't forget we are raiding Gregs on the 10th !!!!!!!!!!!!!1
post some things that everyone will be doing during the wrench session.
I may be adjusting carbs, I will find out when I get there. I put shims and jets in during the November session. I am getting some discolorization on front pipes. could be running lean. I will then be trying to remove the blue after that.
how's it running for ya?

Talking
Waiting for someone else to do it
Asking when it's time to eat
When is Greg coming out of the house.
Telling Allen, your oiler is leaking....oil
Looking at bikes
Looking at Planes
Again, when is Greg coming out
:P :P

If (or did you) you let your bike run at high idle with the chock on for an extended period of time your headers will turn.
Call Greg after 7 am and he'll be up

I hardly use the choke at all.
Well, I just put a brand new set of rebuilt carbs on my V65 Magna, and it's running like a champ. However, the "noise" I was worried about seems to be getting a little louder, and it comes and goes, you can't hear it going down the road, only at low RPM.
I had another friend listen to it, and he thinks I need new cam chain tensioners? He's a pretty experienced V-4 guy so I believe what he's saying, but I told him about the wrench session on the 10th, and he said adjusting the valves won't help if the tensioners are bad. He said I should just order new ones from Dave Dodge and replace them at the same time!!!! Anybody have this kind of mechanical aptitude? I certainly don't! I also don't want to waste time with a valve adjustment if that's not going to fix the problem. This guy is an avid Honda V-4 restorer from Oklahoma, he came down over the weekend to pull a motor from one of my V65 Sabre parts bikes. Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Maybe I'm just SOL?
Sounds like you have good advice from a reliably source as you say and one who has heard it first hand.
I would order some tensioners and go that route, of course it's easy to do a valve adjustment also unless you have bucket & shim type than you will need the proper assortment of shims. I don't know that motor, if you have the adjustment screw on top it's simple.
Some tensioners are easy to get to and replace by pulling the valve covers off someone with this knowledge might chime in and let us know. If they are easy to get to Allen :-P would love to do this (help) at the wrench session.

It is running great. I dont have any hesitations
I've searched online and found alot of good info, especially on the V4 BBS, here's a pretty detailed thread about it, with pictures! I'm going to go ahead and order the tensioners from Dave Dodge and go from there. I will trailer the bike over, so if worse comes to worse and it doesn't get done, I won't be stranded there! Still be a good opportunity to meet others and help out if needed! I can do alot of things, this task just seems too daunting for me, and I don't want to screw it up!!!!

Don't forget gaskets you might need. I am unable to see the thread you posted. On my CB750 in order to remove the valve covers the motor had to be pulled.....yours probably wouldn't take the motor being pulled, thats why it's hard to answer some of this unless you know the motor.
Under FAQ on this forum under Manuals you can download the service manual. Do that and read over the section for this area, print off the pages and bring with you.
From what I've read, gaskets are not needed, except maybe valve cover and those are usually reusable. I will see if I can dig up a spare set just in case! I also have an assembly manual, but these guys on the V-4 forum have detailed instructions and I will print all that too. Just wondered if there is going to be anyone there that's done this before? I'm hoping Dave Shireman (SmokedU) will chime in, I think he told me once he could do this job in his sleep! :-P

Valve adjustments?
Heck, I just roll 'em in the crick and go buy another one :P
Here's a hint: I'll be bringing my
large coffee cup and some Snickers bars.
OK, talked to Dave Dodge last Thursday and he has my new cam chain tensioners in the mail, so everything is a GO for next Saturday! Not sure about the weather yet, sure was nice yesterday though, SmokedU, JumbroBret and myself enjoyed a nice 150 mile road trip around Lake Texoma, 84 degrees and sunny yesterday, GOD I LOVE TEXAS!!!!!!
