Title: 2 stroke question
Post by: dgc67 on December 12, 2008, 10:09:52 AM
I see a lot of 2 stroke ads on CL where the top end is fresh.  Often the bike is not all that old.  Is this due to them not mixing the oil/fuel properly causing the parts to wear prematurely, or is this normal?

I ask because I am thinking of getting a little PW50 or similar for my kids to learn to ride on.

From what i know which ain't much LOL 2 strokes need to be rebuilt often why I do not know sure Terry will chime in but the PW50 is it not a four stroke I thought if so no problem. You might also look into a Honda XR50 I think great little bikes and lots of Upgrades !!!!

Oh MOST definitely!!!!!!! 8) 8)   I think it has to do with the oil mix and that the engine depends on oil in the gas but hey that is a guess!!!

the XR50 holds its value much better for sure.  They cost twice as much as the PW.  I am not looking to get them into racing or anything, but they want to try riding.  So, I will take the cheap route and if one of them really takes to it then I will consider nicer stuff.
It is actually my 10 yr old daughter who wants it, she asks every day for a dirt bike for about the last 2 years.

They are clutchless.  I want her to have to shift as I think it is an important part of learning to ride.  I think making a first bike TO easy ride is asking for trouble.  It allows people to ride who don't really have the ability to ride a regular bike.  I think that is a recipe for disaster.

Two strokes usually do need to be rebuilt more often, but they are usually pretty easy to rebuild as well.

My boss's grandson races motorcross with a suzuki 85.  He does a top-end every 6 races.  He said it is necessary to keep up with the other bikes.  Just wear and tear is the main reason he said. And loosing power.  $130.00 a pop too.  Just the top end though.  Not the whole engine.

I disagree, lots of folks, my self included started on mini bikes and scooters. Nothing wrong with learning in steps, once you learn to balance and handle a bike, adding shifting is a breeze. My whole bunch started with automatics (actually slip clutches) . This is just my personal opinion and certainly not my intention to tell you how to train your kids to ride. I'm sure she will be excited with what ever you get.  8)

Don't let the 2-Stroke bother you.

You will have little if any issue as far as rebuilds go for a play bike. Racers rebuild often as any do similar to Nascar, they want every bit they can get out of a motor.

Two strokes have twice as many compression strokes (reason for more top-ends ) as a 4 banger and a 50cc 2 stroke will have noticeably more punch than a 50cc four stroke, more fun!!

It also depends on how it's built. Many Suzuki 750's are known to hit the 100,000 or above mark w/o requiring a top-end rebuild but on a Kawasaki H1-H2 you would be doing top-end rebuilds after 10,000 miles. Some of this could be people just rode the crude out of these but the Kawasaki's were not known to be as reliably as the Suzuki's were in other areas also, clutch, gears, oil pumps, etc.

I have a KX250 (Kawasaki's motocross race bike) and never did a top-end with no plans for one either. Get what work for you and you'll (and your kids) will have a blast.
