Title: regular or hightest
Post by: 95magna on December 30, 2008, 07:45:18 PM
what kind of gas are you guys putting in your bikes, regular, medium grade,or high octane?
i think it calls for fuel up to 91 octane.so would it call for medium grade, which i think it is 89 octane or close to that
would appreciate some input

We have talked a few times on the topic.  What I have got from the threads is the low grade is all we need.  But we don't like the 10 % alcohol.  Anything higher then the low grade is a waste of money and possibly loss of power.

But correct me if I am wrong.

I agree generally with the above post, but mine knocks with regular, so I use mid-grade.

Correct, 87 octane Reg.

Cheapest grade, and it's never given me any trouble.  In fact that's been one real improvement in going to the Magna; my old GS1000, like just about all the big Japanese fours of the 70s and early 80s, liked to ping on any but the highest octane fuel - Sunoco 93 was what I fed it whenever possible.  Maggie May, bless her, has less expensive tastes.

I'm down on the gasohol too, but sometimes it's really difficult to find anything else.  And while there are still some stations (mostly smaller ones) around these parts that sell alcohol-free gas, they all seem to have these pumps that won't take plastic - you have to go inside and pay cash in advance, which is ridiculous and unreasonable, especially if you don't know how much room you've got in the tank.  I don't know what the connection is but I know every time I pull into a station with a "NO GASOHOL" sign, it turns out there's no card slot on the pump.

I'll second that, William. I can't find anything that's not "up to 10% ethanol" around the North Metro Atlanta area, but at least the Flying Purple Harley Eater seems fine with the 87 octane stuff. It does appear to get a little more lively with the higher octane gas, but I have detected no pinging with the cheap stuff. Wish I could say that about my Ford Ranger's 3.0 V-6, which has turned out to be nothing but a gutless connoisseur of fine gasolines, with a penchant for 93 octane.

I had a 4.0 Ranger and it used regular just fine.. I got the 4.0 instead of the 3.0 because it was actually rated at 1 MPG better than the 3.0. Around town I only got between 15 - 16 MPG, but it was regular..

I started feeding Maggie mid-grade, but switched to regular as a result of the previous discussion on this forum.

I can tell no difference in mileage, sound, or performance.  The plugs look good after several thousand miles on it.

As for brand, I think they all pump from the tank.  Some pricier brands will add a tiny bit of "super stuff" of some sort which they claim provides magical powers, but I have never noticed any difference.  So whether driving or riding, I fill at the lowest possible price.

Prices vary a great deal.  On Thursday, I filled the pickup for $1.299 per gallon, but on my ride yesterday out to Kerrville, I paid 1.599 for Maggie.  Fortunately, for 2.5 gallons, it doesn't make that much difference. :-D
