Title: East Texas Hot Link Lunch Run
Post by: Jamtndll on January 11, 2009, 03:54:10 PM
I have tentatively set the route for the link run to Pittsburg from Van.  The ride will be app. 160 miles round trip.  We will be riding to Pittsburg eating lunch and doing some looking around Pittsburg. We will then head south to tyler to drive through Camp Fannin, a WWII training facility and POW camp.  Just a little info on this camp.  In the 1943 the school in Van burned.  German POW's were brought from Camp Fannin to rebuild the school.  That school is still standing and is being used for classes still.  I still need to do a pre ride (next couple of weeks) to check all roads and gas stops.  I am looking at doing it the first Saturday in March.  March 7. I will get more info out as I sew up the loose ends.  Hope that alot of you can make it.  Come on East Texas Moosters lets have a big turn out for this event to welcome all our visitors. 8)

Count me in.  The Pittsburgh Hot Links may not be the best food you've ever eaten, but they are probably the greasiest.

Does anybody know if the Ezekiel Airship is still on display at the Cotton Belt Depot?  Years ago you could see it for free at a local restaurant.  I understand they have moved it to the local museum.  For those of you unfamiliar with this very interesting piece of east Texas history, check it out at:

Great route coming home Jim.  That's the kind of route I like.  No person in their right mind would drive that route in a car, but on a motorcycle it's just the ticket!!  I'm looking forward to the ride.  Don't know if I'll make the pre-ride or not but I'll let you know as the time gets near.

Alright gentlemen. The weather on Saturday is 73 degrees and sunny for the pre-ride.

Let's hook up.

I'm trying to get JumboBret to come along on my V65.

Jim, as I recall there is a gas station or two at the bridge where Hwy 16 or 314 crosses over I-20. Can I meet you there in the morning? What time?

There's a tough decision. Get your fingers greasy with a water pump or get them greasy on a Pittsburg sausage link.

What should I do? What should I do :-? :?:

I can crank up early enough to get there by nine.

Starts out chilly, but is 68 degrees by noon and 71 degrees by 2:00 PM. Any other takers?

Dave and I just got back from the preride.  It went well, there is some great scenary, some great roads, some interesting roads, some great food.  We even visited East Texas' motorcycle graveyard.  5-6 acres of dead bikes lined up in rows.  The museum in Pittsburg is next door to the cafe.  That is where the Ezekial Airship is, along with some other things.  The cost is $4 if we decide to go there.  We can leave Van at 9:30 and be there on time to eat lunch.  That will put us at 154 and 515, our first stop and pick up around 10:30.  I talked with the people at the hot link cafe and asked them if they took reservations.  They said no but if we could call that morning and let them know how many they would try to keep a section of the cafe free for us.  When we were walking away after getting our food the girl at the registar turned to the manager and said you may want to put this on the calendar the biker guys will be coming through March 7.  Lets pack the cafe with 25 or 30 of us.  See you guys on the 7th

For all of you who missed the Hot Link pre-ride:

NAW... NAW.. NA-NAW...NAW!!!

Jim and I had a great day.

Great roads, No "Bridge Outs", Good eats and lots o' sunshine.

So There!

Having said that, when I got home, my rump was in the shape of my Mustang seat. This morning I knew I had been on a 200+ ride when I got up for Mass.

Whoever rides in March is going to have a great time. The scenery is fantastic and there's a little bit of everything here in roads and speeds.

If you have never had a Pittsburg Hot Link, you are in for a special treat. These babies are the flagship and standard that should be the example for the sausage industry (I'm not a big fan of sausage, but I could eat these by the sackful).

Pray for good weather on March 7 and let's have a big showing.

Jim and I discussed making a visit to the Red Springs Motorcycle Graveyard during his spring break from teaching responsibilities (one day during that week). I'll cage it out in the van, so if you are interested in going from Dallas/Ft Worth, let's talk about it. I don't know what 7 acres of metric bikes might hold nor could I see it all yesterday, but it might be a treasure hunt adventure for a junkyard dog.

Great pics, guys.  Wish it were just a tad closer, but by the time I get there from Austin + 200 miles + return to Austin---- whew!  Way more than I can manage.

In any case, have a great time, and post more pictures.

Jim, that is a generous offer.  I fear that a three day weekend to eat hot links might not sell too well with my sweet wife.  And I really need to be here Sunday mornings if I can.  Our little church meets in our home.  But I really appreciate the spirit of your offer.  Thanks.

Look forward to the ride and seeing everyone again. I'll finally get a chance to try out my cb if someone else is running one.

Map program tells me it will take about 3 1/4 hours to get there from Frisco via Wylie, I'm sure that will take less  :-). We could make the first meet point at the Home Depot in Frisco on 121 and Ohio St. @ 7am. Then go to Wylie and leave there by 8am to make it to lunch by 11:30. Route I have will take us just north of Rockwall and across Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork. Route and times can be changed to meet everyones needs.

Haha, your assuming I'm going.....and I almost bit.

If I can make it I don't know which one yet, it will be one of those listed below. If 2-up I will take one of the Magna's or the Suzuki GT750, if by myself with a slower group I can ride the GT380, faster group and I will have to step up the displacement. The GT750 has a overflowing carb, replaced the float needle set and adjusted the float, something is still wrong.

The thing to consider the ride after Pittsburg will be the pace you will need a bike to keep up.

I'm good to cruise at 80 unless there is a lot of headwind, if we are above that I need more CC's.

Ruben, I don't have a route planned.  Why don't we meet at the Race-Trac at I-35E and Beltline Road at 6:20 am?  We can then take I-35E up to 121 and over to Frisco.

This day just keeps starting earlier and earlier . . .

If you need any more info send me a PM.. For anyone new, no alcohol we try to ride safe and have a good time, we are a family oriented group and invite you to join us.

Drummmmmm Rooolllllll.

Jeff, read this.

I'm going (http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa214/TLRam1/Smilies/Kopievanmoto.gif)  and John & Barbara and Mary Ellen will be coming along, maybe one guy from Waco  will meet us at the restaurant.

Now to you Jeff,

It looks like your route is coming through Allen on the way to Wylie, I live in Allen (Bethany & HWY 5 aka Greenville) and my group could catch you as you are coming through.

Where did you plan on going through Allen at? If you are not coming through Allen, give me your route and I will figure out where we can hook up.

I can hookup my CB if I wear my 3/4 helmet, we will see.

Jumbobret is coming over to my house (DeSoto) early Saturday and we will leave from there. Maybe we can hookup at Polk St/I-20?

I wanted to ride out Hwy 80 and drop into Van from the north. I-20 is boring crap riding into the sun.

Greg C. are you going or not???

Terry, Our route is this so far...
121 to Stacy, Stacy SE to Country Club road, SE on Country Club to W. Lucas Road, E on W. Lucas Road to Southwest Drive to Parker Rd to 544 E to 78 and then 78 to 205.

Since you know more about the Allen area than I do let me know of a good meeting point and I will add it to the route.

Jeff, so you will not have to change your route we will meet you at the intersection of Country Club & W. Lucas Road at 7:40 - 7:45am . C. Club Rd. dead ends into Lucus Rd., we will be on the NW corner, your right as you come south on C. Club Rd., that will put us in Wylie at 8 am. It's a Community Hall for Lucus with a gravel parking lot.

If you see us just keep going and we can fall in, if you get there early I recommend you stop.   :-P

Well!!! This is turning into one giant ride group from my perspective! Greg, are you bringing the MOOT banner?????
This is my understanding of the situation at this time:
Jeff H, Jeff A, Na, Ruben, Ron, Bob & Chuan, Don, leaving Home Depot (Ohio and 121) at 7 a.m., meeting Terry and his group at Lucas Community Hall around 7:40 a.m., proceeding through Wylie and SE to meet up with Greg C near Quinlan?
If I am leaving anyone out of this Northern group let me know.

Yep my plans at the moment are to fall inline near 34 in Quinlan.  I will let ya know if that changes.  Trying to push my brother Kelly into going, however his NEW tires are to arrive tomorrow off the truck.
Not sure we can get them mounted before sunrise Saturday.  I may hank my good tires off the Project and slap em on his bike for the day.

Who will be running CB's in Jeff H's group?

I will probably hook mine up for this run since a few others will have theirs also.

Use channel 1, we can change but start on channel 1.
