Title: Dyna Beads/balance tires
Post by: rjb/AKA Bob Barram on January 16, 2009, 03:06:52 PM
Has anyone seen this done before?
Tiny beads used to balance your tires instead of the lead pieces put on the outside rim.

It can be done with a new tire or inserted through the valve stem on an existing tire.

Curtis has used this.. I would wait for his review, but I think he is a big supporter..
Here is an example video.

I am planning on using this when I put on my car tire.. (DarkSide)

Bob, how did you miss the Dyna Bead discussion a few months back?  It's all there.  I've got them in one Valk, the other tire didn't need any weight.  I have no comparison info though because I didn't check the balance on the second car tire, just dumped in the beads.

One tip though, if you add them through the valve stem pour them s l o w l y so that they go in single file or they will bridge and not go in.

I have to admit that I don't understand how these little beads can work.   I don't challenge that they do, I just don't get it.  Probably why I am not a mechanical engineer, but intuitively it just looks to me as though they would roll to the point of maximum excursion from the center as a result of the distortion in the tire and centrifugal forces, and make the imbalance worse, not better.

Would BB's work as well?  Or are they made of magic fu-fu dust or something?

BBs would work to balance the tire, however they may fail for other reasons (corrosion, grinding themselves to dust, etc...).  When I was first researching these, my thought was exactly as yours as to how they would work.  Evidently it has more to do with harmonics than the maximum excursion from center.  Another one of those counter intuative circumstances, I guess.

Normally I get this stuff but still don't understand how they work.
