Title: Anyone want to build a nice bike?
Post by: jp2magna on January 26, 2009, 02:59:57 PM
I've got my baby listed on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260352467125

I carried Liability (as is the law) but the woman who pulled out in front of me carried nothing.

On my next bike, I know to include Uninsured Motorist.

If I were a good motorcycle mechanic, I'd just search for a donor parts bike and fix what I have; however, I'm a software developer and I do some light welding on the side. If I did a project like this, I'd worry that I would kill myself.

Sorry to hear about your luck...
Did you really mean to list the bike with no reserve??

Yes, that was intentional.

I don't know how much it is worth, so I didn't know what to put for a reserve price.

The way I see it, supply and demand will ensure the bike sells for close to the right amount.

So, go ahead! Bid a dollar (that's the starting price).

Man, I hate that that happened to you. State Farm recently bumped up Uninsured Coverage (at least in GA) unless specifically declined. There are so many colon loaves around here with no insurance that I decided I'd have to be out of my mind to take issue with it for just this very reason.

Okay, be warned, I'm climbing up on my soapbox, now...

Ahem...

Of course, people go without liability insurance because the law and the courts do not make it sufficiently painful to go without it. Such people take the position that they don't have anything much to lose anyway, so WTH and you're welcome to as much of nothing as you want. And our prissy little legislatures and judges have allowed that situation to stand for decades if not a couple of hundred years because some crybabies couldn't stand the thought of debtors' prisons. If your uninsured motorist found herself looking at a mandatory five-year prison sentence with no parole for causing a wreck and carrying no liability insurance, she would damn well have found a way to carry it if it meant skipping dessert for the rest of her life.

Please note that my exact wording was "for causing a wreck and carrying no liability insurance." Merely not having liability insurance should not itself be a crime, but causing a wreck without compensating the victims should be. The choice should be stark: you want to get by without insurance, you go right ahead, but you had better be the safest and most competent driver around. The bleeding hearts have saddled us with motorists who are neither.

I hope you informed the police so they can ticket her and take her to small claims court for the damage. Glad to hear you are up and around. Are you going to buy another bike?

I am quite tempted to snatch up your Magna for parts/projects in the future.

Can you PM your price???

I honestly wouldn't know how much to ask for it, Greg. I want to ask a lot, because I really enjoyed the bike, but at the same time I see drivable Magnas going on eBay for under $3k. I still feel like my bike should be worth $4k or $5k, but I guess it isn't. {sigh}

I had a motorcycle cop come to the scene, and he ticketed her. The card she showed was valid, but her insurance company denied the claim because she was delinquent on payments. I've got a small claim filed on her, but I've been told not to expect anything from it.

I've got pictures I took for the court case, but it seems I don't have them on this computer - they must all be at work. (gotta remedy that).

I've got my eye on another bike, now, and it is a Harley, of all things. They've got a new type of Sportster they are coming out with called an XR1200 (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/harley-davidson/2009-harleydavidson-sportster-xr1200-review-87709.html (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/harley-davidson/2009-harleydavidson-sportster-xr1200-review-87709.html)). The quarter-mile times I've seen on it are in the 12s, which is what the Magna was supposed to do, so not a big change in power.

I have a coworker that will be watching it.  He is going to measure my tubes to see if his extra tubes will fit.

How is the front rim?

Ouch!

It appears, and I hope, that your injuries will heal with time, and without wearing casts, etc.

I know that you have allready put it on ebay I hope that you get a fair price for it, I had the same thing happen to my 94 Magna several years ago a car made a left hand turn right in front of me I laid it down doing about the same damage as your bike the guy that turned in front of me kept going after he saw me get up. I took the bike apart an parted it out it took me some time to sell all the parts but I got about 2800 dollars out of it that way. I didn't have the road rash that you have but my leg looked about the same took about 2 months for it to heal up. Hope that things work out for you.

I've always gone to the gym, and I did some very light squats about a week after the wreck. My leg was really sore afterwards, but I think it helped the leg to heal faster. I only had that nasty bruise for about a month.
