Hey all been a while since i've posted, been busy this winter.
I'm just trying to get some performance parts for this coming riding season and had some questions for the community.
I'm looking to change the petcock on bike to one of the Highflow Pingle petcocks either the "Guzzler" or "Power-Flo" model and was curious if it was just a straight bolt on change or if it required some more fabrication work to get it to fit, also if anyone knows the thread size of the tank spigot for the petcock that would be helpful.
I also need to buy a new set of plug wires and was going to change the coils to Dynatek coils at the same time and i was wondering what people were using for the primary and secondary resistances, and if there was any modification required to the ignition coil bracket for mounting.
I was also wondering if anyone's ever ran a 43/15 setup on the Magna and if so was the acceleration/gas mileage noticeably different over a 40/15 or 43/16 setup?

WOW a guy after my own heart, lol. i have alot of performance goodies on my bike. you won't need the guzzler model. this one bolts right up from pingel, but do yourself a favor, get it from dave dodge aka DRP performance parts, it's going to be cheaper. here's the pingel number:

I also am running the dyna coils, 3 ohm coils. rear one bolts up pretty good, front one i made a small bracket for and truned the coil a little different than stock. also using dyna 8mm wires, dyna 3000 ignition module. Attached are some pics. I am also running larger main jets/slow jets, k&n air filter, vance & hines pipes. I have a few more goodies to put in like the 43/15 combo, kevlar clutch, and a new shift star/detent arm/roller bearing combo from factory performance parts. When installing the new petcock, i bypassed the stock vacuum diaphram fuel shutoff and went straight into a pingle 1 into 2 fuel filter and then ran new lines from the filter right to the carb banks. You have my favorite stock color on these bikes Chad, I think it was only used in 95. I would trade my body set for that color.

I think when you get all this done, You are just going to have to take the saddlebags off the bike..
It will be just way to fast to try and be a "cruiser", or is that your plan.. To make it into a real "Sleeper" bike that nobody expects to be "That fast!"

I would believe that with the 43/15 combination, your going to be running some pretty high revs at 75 MPH.. Probably between 6.5 and 7.5K RPM's... So, again, you probably won't be needing those Saddle bags...
It just so happens I know someone that might want to buy those saddlebags if they work with stock pipes... (me)..
I love the color too.. We have already had that discussion.. I had a '76 750 in that color.. Very Nice..
Thanks for all the info Chad, yah you and me both have high test running in our veins, whatever I can do to make the Magna faster if I had the time and money i'd send the whole motor to DRP and get the stage 2 mods done to it. Unfortunately Dave doesn't sell Pingle parts anymore.
I'll be running pretty much the same setup as you, all SS cables, Dyna 3000+coils+wires, Pingle Petcock, #115 mains #45 slows, K&N, Vance&Hines, and i need to replace the chain and sprockets and was thinking of going 15/43 and just saying screw the fuel mileage lets go for giddy up and go.
I also have a pretty sweet LED light kit on my bike that i want to expand, as well as getting rid of the license plate bracket/rear turn signals/brake light for a single LED strip light that does Run/Stop/Turn and side mounting the license plate off of the swingarm or something.
If you can let me know how the Kevlar clutch performs that would be awesome I find the stock one right now has no grab until about the last 1/4"-3/8" of the clutch lever.
What are you hoping to improve by replacing the "shift star/detent arm/roller bearing combo"??

The Kevlar clutch hooks up nicely with a more confident grab, you do need to use Barnetts springs which are heavy than stock ones.

Yeah - I replaced my clutch with a heavy duty model with heavier springs.. (don't think it was Barnetts).. It makes heavy stop and go traffic much more of an exercise session on my left arm.. If I did more of it, I would look like half a Popeye, only on the left side though! (all forearm, no bicep)

The Harley I bought in 1963 was a '52 model that had been converted from tank shift and suicide clutch to foot shift with hand clutch -- trouble is, no one bothered to replace the clutch spring. I developed a heck of a grip in my left hand!! -- Also learned to shift by matching speeds with the clutch left engaged.
In reference to Barnetts springs, their regular springs are stiffer, I never used their HD springs. You can tell it's firmer but not enough as you mentioned Hoot.
I'm a big fan of Barnetts, no reason other than their clutch and springs fits my purpose in just the right amount for a street bike.

well it finally warmed up here this week. i got a chance to work on the bike. i installed the 115 mains( up from the 112's) , went down to two shims, and i have the 45 pilots turned down to 2.5 turns out. i also tried to bench sync the carbs, i could see they were slightly off. i have the gauges, but have yet to hook them up. before i took the carbs apart, i installed new irridium plugs, gapped them to .35 (slightly larger than needed, but wanted to see what this would do) and ran it in the garage, up/down the street for a minute. i then checked one of the plugs. it was sooty. i had the 'd' screws out to 3.5 turns. after changing the jets & removing a shim, the throttle response is quicker and snappier. i only rode it up/down the block. my battery needs to be charged and i know it will die on me at a light. i did notice that when the battery is low, it will act like it is misfiring or out of gas on a carb. I also noticed the 3rd shim I had installed was the same thickness as the stock shim. the DD shim I have is thinner. I left the stock shim and the DD shim installed. I have yet to ride it yet but i think it'll be nice. I'll post back when I can get 'er on the road.

AFAIK I think it was only used on the '95's. it sure is pretty when i clean it up and wash it, but it's been awhile, lol :)
hoot sait he had that color on a bike he used to have too. i do know that it is called 'candy glory red' and i have 2 touch up bottles. i should get the paint code off the bottle and post that too.

The shift star/denent arm will make shifts quicker, you can bang 1st to 2nd with no missed shifts or you can downshift hard and no missed shifts. check out factorypro.com (ithink) and there you will find all kinds of performance goodies for various bikes. i also have a pingel electric easy shift i plan to install on here too. i have all the wiring nad electronic delay box/push buttons hooked up. just need to fab up a bracket to hold it in place. i have yet to figure out where i want it. BA on here is planning on helping me fab up a bracket. SO far, i've been able to use the pushbuttons to cut out power to the coils and that lets the trans unload, and i shift with my foot without the clutch. after the solenoid is mounted, that will shift the bike without the clutch. you still have the option to shift manually if you want to.
it will look something similar to the pics below.
by the way, i found this pic of a guy on a magna doing wheelies. if i remember correctly, he had 15/43 gearing too :)

A few more pics for you. the detent arm on the left is the stock one. you can see the one on the right has a roller bearing which will make it smoother and the spring is heavier for a positive feel. i also think i need to repack the mufflers. it sure is loud this year :)

Chad - Any time you're ready for me to get that bracket fabricated, just let me know. My machinist can work from sketches, or if you can drop off the cylinder they could fabricate something to fit. I almost rode the bike to work today. I think it hit 65 degrees. When I was in Brownsville last week it was in the 90's for a couple days, but on Saturday we got caught in the rain and the temp dropped to the low 50's. Of course we didn't have any rain gear and the 40 mile ride home was very chilling. By the way, the new Magna ran great. I put on a windshield, new mirrors, and I got the Honda engine guards. Now I only need another Mustang seat.

I've been emailing back and forth with Dave Dodge trying to get the performance parts I started this post about. He seems to think there's an issue with the Dyna Wires, he's under the impression that they no longer provide a water tight seal on the "Valve Covers" and that moisture is able to go down into the spark plug cavity and rust out the plugs.
Can anyone confirm this, either
A) the Dyna Wires do seal the valve cover and it's not a problem
B) the Dyna Wires don't seal the cover, but the plugs are still fine
C) the Dyna Wires don't seal the cover and the plugs rust out

The dyna wires come with ends on them already. One wire will do the entire bike. I still have one left over with the ends on it. for the rear coil, I used the long boots that came on it. for the front, i cut off the ends and installed a 90 degree boot if i remember correctly. the wires(or coils-i forget) come with new and different boots and metal inserts that go inside the boot. for the wires that go on the spark plug end, i cut off the ends too. the old wire comes out of the cap fit for the bike with a little force. you then can insert a new wire in it's place. inside the honda spark plug boot is a little metal poker that will make contact with the spark plug core. i used a little dielectric grease to aid in the insertion ontop of the silicone jacketed wires. i think the 7mm ones will fit without doing this, but i already got the 8mm wires. here are some pics of the wire when you get it, and a pic of the wires on the bike with the honda cap. hope this helps :) Also there is a pic of the dyna 3000 module on the bike. the pics probably don't look that good, they were taken with my cameraphone. the batteries died in my real cameras. :(
