Title: Ordered cam chain tensioner and kevlar clutch from DD
Post by: dgc67 on March 06, 2009, 09:45:11 AM
Ordered the parts today.  He felt I would not need the gaskets but told me what to look for before I pull them off.  Basically cracks, makes sense.  My bike has been slipping some in the higher rpms, just as the power kicks in so I ordered the clutch as well.

I plan on putting these on in about 2 weeks if anyone is interested in seeing it done or wants to help.  Next weekend I am going to mount my new tires as well.  Got my 3/4" valve stems in the mail yesterday.

Make sure your hydraulics are working properly and releasing all the pressure to the clutch.

Allen,
Do you have tire irons or do I need them?  I have the same tire changer as Terry got, and really wanna try it out and so I can justify to my wife me buying it.

I started to just tell Dave to get me the gaskets as well, but he kinda sounded like he does not have them.  When I mentioned them he said something like, "those should still be available I guess".  Then he said with my mileage it should not be a problem, but I agree that you just never know with gaskets.

Cool.  Let me check with my wife and make sure Sunday is OK.  I will let you know.  Where can I get some tire irons?  I have a couple long flat head screw drivers, but no tire irons.

I guess you can't do Saturday?  The problem with Sunday is we go to church and could not get started till noon due to that.  On a Saturday I can start as early as I want.  Some Sunday's my wife and son sing in the choir, if that weekend is one of those I can't do a Sunday for sure.  If they are not singing I can get out of it, though she frowns on my working on anything on Sunday's.

I'm impressed! The good old Magna is sure a robust piece of machinery, but when something is to be done, it seems to be just fun over there  Keep up the good spirit, and the Magna will probably live forever, at least in Texas.
Here in cold Norway, I'm waiting for tempteratures high enough for some garage-work. Steelbraided brakeline, new pads and progressive springs are on the menu this spring. Right now I have 30 inches og snow outside mu window :???:New coolant is also on the list. From the work on the front-end I'm expecting a "new" kind of front brakes, and looking forward to it 8). What is the practical difference between the DD clutch and the stock?

You will be happy with the SS lines for sure!
The DD clutch kit is a kevlar clutch and heavier springs.  The combination makes for a much stronger "grabbier" clutch.
I think the problem I am having, as Terry reminded me a couple posts up from this one, my pressure is not releasing all the way.  I opened the MC and it is pretty filthy in there.  So, looks like I am doing a rebuild of that as well.

DG there is a very small relief hole in the bottom of the cylinder that a very small wire such as you can pull out of your wire brush will fit.  It relieves the pressure on the back side of the pistion assembly.
Trust me there is a hole there and it is difficult to see...

I still need to do the cam chain tensioners on my V65 Magna!  JumboBret has kindly offered his services, but he has been a little under the weather lately, so the project waits!  V45 and V65 should be very similar, I got my tensioners from DD also, great guy to talk to!!  Good luck, let us know how it goes, take pictures!!   :-P

The tensioners and the clutch have not come in yet so I don't think we should make plans for this weekend.  Plus, I have been away from home on business since Sunday evening and won't return till Thursday evening.

I am in no huge rush to get it done, seeing how I have already ridden it over 10k miles listening to it rattle.  Maybe we can reschedule for a couple weeks away?

if he won't answer, try www.phatperformanceparts.com that is where i got mine from. I like dave and have ordered from him, but he is a one man operation, and either is very busy all of the time or is moving to a different state, etc. I've tried emails, phone calls, messages, etc and if I want to buy somehting that day, well you better answer or i will shop elsewhere. tha's just me though :)  if you need the part number, i'll dig it up in a little bit, and the one i got included all the friction plates, all the metal plates, all the springs. you will also have to order (from honda, or another honda supplier) a clutch cover gasket. most likely when you take the cover off, the gasket will be in a few pieces. if you need instructions on how to do it, there are some on this site somewhere or I could find them and post them to you.

Dave has moved to Arizona about 2 months back or so.  I have heard other people have had some trouble reaching him.  I bought mine back in March and every time I have called him he has answered.  I have been lucky I guess.

Who has the best price? Who has the best clutch?  Do they both sell Barnett clutches?
Mine is about ready to replace is why I'm asking...

The one I bought, for my 84 mind you, is a Kevlar and came with heavy duty springs.  It is not a Barnett.  Just came in a shipping box wrapped in bubble wrap.  I mostly bought it from Dave as he was so nice.  We talked extensively, more than once, on what I can do to make my bike perform better.
