Title: 1996 Magna knocking in left rear cylinder
Post by: cruisin on April 01, 2009, 08:42:38 AM
I went for a ride on my Magna the other day and when I returned I noticed a knock in the left rear cylinder.
The bike has been running great with no problems.
I checked the oil level, and it was fine.
The bike still runs good but has the knock at idle and accleration.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it may be.
Thanks

I'm in the Houston area.
The bike has just a little over 14000 miles on it.

Mine did that on the left front this season's startup. i found oil in the air box, specifically in the air bleeds that feed that cyl. could be bad gas or fouled plug. start checking the plugs, see what you find. if it's wet, there is a problem with the spark-but the coil that fires that plug also fires the one next to it. one coil for the front, one for the rear. if it's dry, there may not be gas or enough gas getting to it.

Sorry I wasn't available to meet with you.
I'm just hoping it something to do with the valves or something and not a rod, or piston.

If it's like a slapping thrashing knock, I would check you cam chain tensioners. Both were gone on mine when i checked.

I've never heard of a Magna (or ANY Honda for that matter) needing valve adjustment at only 14,000 miles.

Yep, my money is on the cam chain tensioner for the rear head.

Has the bike sat for a period of time without being ridden?  As with all Magna's they get quite irritated at us for not riding them and the left rear cylinder is usually the first to clog the slow speed jet and will cause this also...

The bike is ridden at least once a week.
It ran just fine with no notable noise when I took off that day. When I returned home I noticed the noise in the rear cylinder close to the valve cover.
I did ride it hard for just a bit because a Harley kept messing with me so I finally showed him what the Mag had and left him.
