Hello All,
Mine is a 94 Magna and ref the front brake.
It pulls the bike up to a stop ok however there seems to be, to me anyway, excessive free play at the lever. Have bled the front hydraulics thoroughly and there does not appear to be air in the system.
Some time ago I read a review of the 750C and it viewed the front brake as being "not highly efficient."
I was wondering if this was the design of the system or, taking into account the age of the bike, is it time to rebuild the master cylinder and caliper.
So how does your front brake feel folks..?
Regards to all...Connor.
My 94 went aways before it grabbed also, my 01 & 97 are much better. I too bleed my system, flushed with new fluid with no help in limiting the grab point.
I replaced the brake line on my '99 with the braided line and it improved the feel and effort for stopping. I now need to install the progressive springs I've had all winter to stop the front end from diving.
What BA said.. I have a 94 as well and the brake feels a little spongy. Through several posts, the Stainless Steel Brake Hose is supposed to improve this.. I have not done the swap yet, but it's on my list..
The new stainless steel brake line was installed at the same time as new, sintered pads. Made a huge difference. Doesn't take as much lever force, and stops much more effectively. The stock rubber brake line let the brakes feel "squishy" and not very effective.
The Progressive springs are a big help in handling. They cure the "nose dive" effect when one brakes hard.
I recommend all three, but if budget limits, the SS line is first, followed by new pads, then finally the springs.
Many thanks gents for taking the time to reply. Now I know how to proceed.
Best regards...Connor.
ps...Touch wood..the bike is going great..!
I would disagree slightly with Lawrence on the order of priority, springs, ss lines, then pads.
When I bought my Magna, it had been wrecked and the mirror mount was broken on the master cylinder. The brakes worked ok but I always thought they should be more firm. I ended up replacing the master cylinder later on with a used one that I got off ebay (just because of the mirror mount.) After I installed it and bled the system I could not believe the difference in braking response. I do plan to put on the progressive springs and stainless brake line in the future.
