Title: Personal Protection Equipment
Post by: Greg Cothern on April 21, 2009, 05:12:59 PM
I want to pass along some thoughts on Personal Protection Equipment while you are wrenching on your Magna or anything else for that matter.

While wrenching on my Project Spitfire yesterday evening I had an injury that was, thank the good Lord, very minimal but awakening nonetheless.
I was drilling out a pop rivet that was holding the headlight bucket in place.  The rivet ended up attaching itself very relentlessly to the drill bit with all its might!  So with the help of my son and a pair of pliers, he grasped the rivet end so I could switch the drill to reverse and simply back the bit out of the rivet piece.  Seems harmlessly enough, have done this many times in the past with NO issues at all.
SNAP!!!  The drill bit breaks and as if it were shot from a canon flies straight and hits me in the EYE!!!!  Yep its all fun and games till someone gets a drill bit in the eye!

Now fully understanding the relative situation I found myself in, I manage to stay calm and ask my son to put away the tools and get help with putting the car parts back into the garage and secure things.  I walked into the house and got the Queen's attention that I had a situation.  Got the saline I had in the vanity for a flush and flushed several times to get any foreign material out which worked wonders, thank goodness I had some for emergencies.

The bit piece had turned just right to not cause any major damage and simply bounced off my eye, just to the side of my pupil on the conjuctiva (white part of your eye).
Went to the eye doc today and he checked things out VERY thoroughly and all is good..

Reason for my drawn out story is to ask you to make use of your personal protection equipment, like a pair of 3 safety goggles I have at my disposal!  It really is much easier to put the funny looking goggles on that to loose and eye!

Glad to hear you were not seriously injured. Due to my types of work over the years eye safety was always a concern by myself and my employers stressed it as well.

Well it's not for maint. but I got my new suit today

You guys are too strong for the bit aren't ya.  :-P Glad to hear you will be okay.

When I am working in the garage where something might fly or debris could find it's way in my eye I use the glasses, this may or may not have been one of those times.

Yeah, I used to think safety glasses and similar paraphernalia were for pansies but a couple of exploding ICs and some wickedly on-target solder splashes have brought me around to the right way of thinking.

Glad you didn't lose that eye, Greg. If you ever watched The Jerk, you understand fully well the dangers of faulty depth perception.

Glad you are O.K, I had a drill accident 20 years ago, drilling out a hole in a metal door frame to install a lock hasp and got a tiny metal sliver in my eye. lucky for me no permanent damage was done. So now safety glasses always. Good advice.

It was a similar accident that led to the first corrective eye surgery. (RK)

Having grown up in a house where my sister lost her eye when we were children, I am usually the first to put on the eye protection.  I can't believe all the people I see riding without eye protection.
