Title: Tire Rot
Post by: MarylandMagnav45 on April 24, 2009, 12:50:55 PM
Hello.

My tires have been on my bike for an estimated 4-5 years.

I have some tire rot and both the front and rear tires.  I probably have like 80% tread left.

Is it dangerous for me to keep running the bike on my rotted tires?

My rule of thumb on motorcycle tires has always been 3 years.  Doesn't matter if I only have 100 miles on them, I replace them if they are 3 years old.

Now on my personal 4 wheeled vehicles, that's a different story!!

On my bike tire rot means replace, we only have 2 and a blowout could be disastrous. Now on my truck around town I have driven on tires like that, but, for long trips new tires. Thats my 2 cents

I find after 18 months (even if you don't have rot) the tire compounds start getting hard (less sticky).. Maybe they are lasting so long because they are so hard!!!
I ride enough I don't have this problem.. With 10K per year, my tires get replace every 18 months anyways..

We have some tricksters, Mootmon is now TLHam1 and Guy Galdios is back in another form.  :?  :P

I had to have a double take what was going on, it wasn't until I checked my profile to realize it was not my Profile or Me!

If you see dry rot it would be my recommendation to replace!!!!!  I believe your life is worth more than $250...

I would change them also.

Going with the car tire I will probably change them before 4 years. I believe they are rated at 50 or 60K miles but on a bike they would last longer.  Putting 10 to 15K a year it is possibly the tire will last longer then the 4 years but I will still change it out.
