Title: Help me pick the correct size rear tire
Post by: barkymarky on July 17, 2009, 08:20:10 PM
When I bought my used 95 VF750 Magna it had a 140/90 on the rear. The Manual calls for a 150/80. I have learned about tire sizes and what the numbers mean so I don't need a technical education. I think a wider tire would look better. So give me your opinions.  Would a 160/80 be good or would a 160/90 be good? I am a weekend warrior, not a skilled road racer. Want to look cool and be safe. Ha! Maybe Honda got it right and I should go with the size the Manual calls for.

I just put on a 170/80 dunlop 555 on my bike.  Looks and rides great.  Only slight modification of the brake stay rod was required.

What modification did you need to do?

You get almost as much out of a tire as I do!!! (almost)

Nice Dark Side.. Which tire is that??  and how many side wall belts does it have??

Thanx for the "SeaFoam" effort.. accepted.

Terry has more of the statistics of the tire.  He was not sure which tire he wanted so he ordered both.  He went with the narrower tire.  Intern I took the wider tire.  The wider tire is also what I wanted.

OK.. How Mushy is the tire when cornering.. That is more subjective, but something you should know..

I basically used my bench vise and put a small s shaped joggle in the front of the rod (about 1/4").  This moved the rod outboard enough to clear the wider tire that is 20mm wider than the stocker.  It is also 1" taller so you'll drop about 500 RPM on the freeway .

There are several ways to make the brakestay rod fit with a wider tire.  Some people use washers to shim the forward end out the required amount, others go with an aftermarket rod made by "Cyclistic".  Either option I would think is prefered to bending the original rod, possibly inducing premature failure under emergency braking conditions.  Bending will cause a weakness in the metal where it was bent which could fail at a most inopportune time.   :o

at 40 plus I feel very little to none.
I run it at 35-38 I feel a little mush but far from soft just feels like it is gripping the road.
