Title: Air filter?
Post by: punchy on August 06, 2009, 03:46:26 PM
Hi all, im having trouble deciding what to do with the air filter...the service manual says to discard
the filter, does this mean the paper filter and the thin plastic frame its fastened to..or is there a way to
get just the paper filter out of its housing and replace that..its a square paper filter.. :???:

What kind of Honda do you have?
When I finally decided to remove the tank from my 95 Magna and change the filter I was surprised that my bike still ran because the filter was SO filthy. Getn a KN. They are good for 40, 000 miles. You will never need to change it agaijn. Good luck.

when you buy the filter the plastic comes with it.

There are clips on each side from the top.  Then the plastic that is bonded to the filter is tossed with it..

If you decide to go with a K&N, there is supposed to be a rubber o-ring that you need to remove from the box before you install the K&N. The K&N is good for a lifetime.. It just needs to be washed periodically and re-oiled. The K&N is a bit more, but worth it if you have to replace the filter more than once and you get a little bump in HP too..

Quoter, does this mean the paper filter and the thin plastic frame its fastened to

First time I pulled my filter, I thought what a waste, all that plastic to have to throw away :-?. I almost started to try to replace just the paper (you would have to know what a cheapskate I am) but I didn't take it apart 8) I just cleaned it :D.. I know,  :-( I will have to eventually change it.

My reaction was just like yours, Charles.  I really couldn't believe the entire thing was to be discarded.  But I had the K&N, and it was clear what had to be done -- so I tossed it.

No worse than an oil filter, I suppose, with all the metal and rubber that goes with it.  It is just that we have been used to tossing the entire oil filter for what, maybe 40 years now??

I think I saw someone who found a filter element that would fit the large plastic holder, that's about all I can remember.

The filters are all of  $17.00 , I really need to get back on my meds and fight this compulsive urge to fix everything myself :-?. I'll have spent an hour to save a nickle. My name is Charles and I'm a cheapaholic  :(..

+1

Learned it from my stepfather.  At the "hardware" store one day, he priced washers in a bag on a rack, and calculated they were 7 cents each.  Went home and drilled holes in nickels...

Not true.  To be used properly, it needs to be cleaned/reoiled every 1000 miles.  I prefer the stock OEM filter.

Unless you're changing everything, running a K&N filter on a stock bike isn't going to change jack.

Remind me never to purchase your motorcycle.  Changing the air filter is the single most important maintenance item you can do to have a "bulletproof" honda engine.

Its funny how people skip out on the inexpensive maintenance items but they'll pour huge chunks of change into mods.

where do you get your information about cleaning the k&n air filter every 1k miles? I have them in my bike and in two of my cars and NEVER check them that much, and one car has over 150k on it. you're not even supposed to check your paper filter elelments that much?!?  Have you even looked at the k&n filter after 1k miles, 2 k, 4k? yep, oil is still there, no need for re oiling. I tap it clean when I check them, but you most definately do not need to wash and re-oil every 1k miles. as a matter of fact, i just re piled the one in my old civic. it was slightly dirty and the red color was getting faded. know how many miles it had on the filter? oh about 30K!

Dan,
I have to agree that your way off base on the cleaning oiling interval on the K&N filters.  Why would anyone buy a filter that required that much maintenance??
Also, IMO, the best thing you can do is keep your oil and oil filter changed.

I do agree that unless you are going to rejet your carbs putting a K&N on is a bad idea.

lol.  that 1k was supposed to be 10k.  It is what the local mechanics recommend.

I'm glad you put so much effort into keeping it clean...most people i know with the K&N, drop it in, and forget it.  Many too lazy to reoil it.

Not looking for a debate....best to post your opinions and all are welcome but I would rather not see someone taking a shot at another on the board. No I'm not an Uncle Tom  (or Greg) :-P and never seen you say stuff like that Dan so it may be just a quick reaction as you were reading.  :-? but no wars.. Nope, and that's why I love this board...and the group of guys.

On other boards like a sportbiker forum I know of, they'll be whole threads based on personal information being thrown left and right, saying real mean things to each other, and no mods ever pull the plug.  This board is way more mature than a bunch of sportbiker forums I used to participate on.

I don't believe in the K&N hype.  The advertisements sound GREAT, but I'm not going to just put in a filter for 50k, and forget about it.  I'll pay the extra change to use OEM filters every 2 years, and monitor it for myself.  There's been extensive studies on this, and there's no proof that K&N claims are any more than a placebo felt by the rider/driver.

Now, i did say, earlier in this thread, maybe if I changed everything to K&N (all filters, rejetted, big bore, etc...), maybe then I'd believe in the logic behind it because it better completes the "system".

Biting remarks notwithstanding, I'm with you Dan on the K&N.  It is very pleasing to me to throw ALL of the dirt away and start fresh with an OEM paper filter.  I've cleaned my daughter's K&N on the Civic she used to have exactly ONCE.  Never again!
