Hi All,
I have decided that the noise I am hearing in my 84 VF700C is coming from the transmission, after reading the thread on varies members and their fearful noises. I know that Terry advised we all get louder pipes and that was the best line of read in a long time. But, I have stock pipes and a loud transmission. If this sound which comes and goes after it warms up is unselected gears rolling and trying to mesh what should I do. I put 100 miles on it this weekend it has good power but that sound worries me. Please advise.
If you pull in the clutch does the noise go away somewhat might be just the clutch they are pretty loud when not engaged !!!
Hi Allen,
It usually happens when I am backing off the throttle, or putting backlash into the gear train.I will get back to you on the clutch questio. I use to think that it was a cam chain hitting the tensioner. It will not start until warm meaning 6 miles out or so and sometimes it wont do it at all for 40 or 50 minutes. I find that it is at it worst in the country up and down hills sharp turns while down shifting for the turn. I live in PA so its is full of its ups and downs. Thanks for the concern. I tried recording yesterday but the wind was louder then the engine. I will try to muffle the wind and let you guys hear this. Thanks
Could very well be the tensioner not a bad job they do rattle when you are off the gas because you are not on the power and the chain goes slack at this time and they make noise when they go south !!!
Might try useing some sort of wooden dowel (old broom handle, etc.) like a stethoscope to isolate the noise. Check the spring on the cam chain tensioner and see if it is broken, I have had them break before.
Thanks Jeff Nice looking Scooters you have all lined up. The funny thing is while idling it all sound fine. I used a 2x2 a week ago but like you said a 18" broom handle would work best. I was thinking of hooking something up so I can isolate while driving. Thanks for the concern. I am going to try to record the sound also. If I can isolate the recorder from the wind.
Drive safely.
