The latest '96 I purchased has two keys -- one fits the ignition and fork lock, the other fits the gas cap. Clearly, someone either destroyed or lost the original cap, and bought a new one with key. (The gas cap is probably the most pristine chrome on the bike -- not a scratch or nick!)
While this situation is not a disaster, it would be nice to use only one key. Have any of you folks rekeyed the Magna gas cap? Any hints? (Like FORGET IT!)
Terry asked this question a while ago.. You may want to ask him if he made any progress.. There is an interesting suggestion, I don't know if it will work or not...

Yes, as stated. :P
I was not able to find a way to accomplish this so my bubbled chrome cap is still being used on my 01 from up north. Not saying it can't be done, I was running into dead ends everywhere I turned and out of time. I asked on several forums from the vintage mechanically inclined to the larger higher tech 10,000 plus member type forums, no help.
Your turn.
Terry - did you try the dual cut key?
I have no proof, but I've been told a good locksmith can change the pins in tumblers to fit the key, assuming that is true, has anyone tried removeing the tumbler from the ign. I distroyed a cap just to see if it could be removed and it'll take a smarter man than me, You might take the cap and the ign to a locksmith and get a second opinion..
I will probably just deal with the two keys -- not worth the trouble or expense to take the whole cheese to a locksmith.
I may, however, try the two-sided key solution, if I can get a local hardware store to grind me one. Will post the results here when/if I get a chance to try it.

No Hoot I didn't try this, my optimal was as factory, key goes either way but a good idea. ;)
Yes, Charles you are correct and I have done this on occasion also, you would have to do the (or I would) steering fork lock also. If I had the time and a spare gas cap I would have destroyed one to see how you access the tumblers if possible w/o tearing the cap up.
My ignition and cap are different keys. I took the two keys to a locksmith. He put the one cut on one side and the other on the other side. LOL

And....??
Does the dual cut key work? Do you fumble around getting it oriented right, of have you cut a notch or some such to help you remember which way to orient it in all three places?

The pattern is different enough that I know which is the tank and the ignition side.
