Ok, first off I don't want to start an oil debate! :) I'm just curious what kind of oil and oil filter people are using and the cost...mostly the cost. I've got DRPs Kevlar clutch on the way, so I'm going to need to switch up the oil and have yet to do it myself. It was last done at the "stealership" when I got a tune up right after I purchased it.
Honda filter $7.25
Mobil 1 MX4T full synthetic motorcycle specific $7.99/quart
Curtis
Curtis, where are you getting your Honda filters? I just purchased one tonight and it was $10! I nearly flipped. I don't remember it being that much about 4 months ago.
I'll be doing my second oil change tomorrow. I've been using the Honda GN4 oil simply because it's $3.49 a quart at my dealership. And the only other "motorcycle" oil near me is the Valvoline at Pep Boys which costs even more. I figure if Honda was smart enough to make the bike they're not going to put crappy oil in it. But I may go with synthetic next time to see if it makes a difference.
I looked into Royal Purple but that stuff is $10/quart.:!:
I'm also interested in what model of car oil filters anyone may be using on their 3rd generation Magna instead of the OEM filter.
MagnaMan, I found this on another forum. http://www.v4hondabbs.com/index.php?showtopic=18602
Thanks, Herman. After looking at your link, I also found another thread with this handy chart.
http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html
I think I'm going to try one of the more advanced filters like the Mobile 1 or the Purolator.
Jesse I get the filter from Honda Direct Line. $7.25 and free shipping. I usually buy a couple and keep them on the shelf for when I get ready to change. Link: http://www.hondadirectlineusa.com/stores/byProduct.asp?prd=Filters&str=7&ID=456973952
Curtis
I have been using Valvoline motorcycle specific oil and stock type filter, however I think I am going to go synthetic.
Yeah might cost a little more but hey instead of oil changes every 3000 miles I can get 7500 or so.
Greg, more miles between drains is why I use synthetic. Also for the smoother and quieter shifting (especially the Valk).
Curtis
Yeah I have noticed my Valk being noisier than when I bought it. The previous owner used synthetic, I switched to "dino" Valvoline, I have good firm shifts just a little more clunk when it shifts.
Now I have to go find synthetic that I can live with hehehehehehe.
Well, I changed my oil a couple of days ago. This time around I still used the Honda GN4 oil because I had a partial leftover quart to make up for the .3 of the 3.3 quarts. However after much research and reading I decided to try the Purolator Pure One PL14610 filter. I was partially motivated by the cost ($6), but more so by the apparent superior filtration.
At the cross reference link I listed above, I found another page (http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html#OilFilters) where a guy had literally taken apart the major brand equivalents and compared them to a Honda OEM filter. Purolater uses three diffent filter surfaces as opposed to just paper. It has is a greater filter surface area and a better anti-drainback valve to keep the filtered junk from flowing back out of the filter and into the pan when the engine is turned off.
The Purolator Pure One PL14612 is an exact match for the size, gasket, and threads of the Magna OEM filter. The PL14610 is the same only about 3/4" longer so I tried it and added the extra oil need to compensate for the larger filter. I haven't put that many miles on it yet, but I'll let you know if I get any bizarre results.
I tried the synthetic car oil without friction modifiers on my last oil change (like much of the internet information says you can), and I found it to make the shifts rougher especially between 1st and 2nd. What used to be a clunk between 1st and 2nd is a now a disturbingly rough clunk, especially if I'm riding it hard.
The clutch is properly adjusted and I only have about 8500 miles on it so I don't think it's worn out. I really do think it's the oil.
So coming up for my next oil change and I want to try the Mobil 1 MX4T Moto Oil. Where are you guys getting it at a reasonable price? The Honda dealership near my house wants $12 a quart!
I get mine at Auto Zone, but sometimes they have it on the shelf and sometimes not. Last time I went in, they only had two quarts. We went in back and there was a cart with miscellaneous oil bottles on it. Lo and behold we found a couple more so I had enough.
Curtis
I found it at Wal-Mart, unfortunately not the one by my house LoL.
Lots of comments about 3rd gen Magnas.
How about some suggestions on FIRST gen Magnas.
Filters specifically.
Ray,
Try that link above with the filter cross referencing. It has info for all the Magna generations.
I was looking for some of our groups 'Personal' recommendations. I used one of those links once and ended up buying the wrong filter.
I use the Mobil 1 Filter - Mobil 1 M1-110 about $10 - on my V65. I've never had any problems.
Marc.
Well, I found the Purolator Pure One and a good part number for my bike.
Anyone else interested, it is the Purolator Pure One #PL14459. I got it from Advance Auto Parts and it cost a massive $5.88.
This works fine for the 1984 V45 Magna VF700C.
I think I finally located a winner. Perfect fit and the specs sound right for the bike.
Changed filter and went pure sythetic using Mobil Clean 5000 (with the Red Cap) and bike seems to be even happier than before. Have run about 350 miles since changing and just purrs.

Ray,
I use Honda or Emgo filters and Castrol 20/50 in the VF's and I use a SuperTech filter and Rotella 15/40 in the 1000R which is what the PO used. Now I am trying to decide which oil to use. My first consideration is to run the Rotella in all of them because of the price. I am also considering useing Royal Purple's M/C specific synthetic oil. I am also looking into useing Royal Purple's Purple Ice in the radiator to help it run cooler.
I can get the royal purple ice if you need some and it is great for the track being that it runs cooler with just water and it mixed... let me know jeff and we can trade hehehelololool for the bottle holder hehelolololool

You got yourself a deal :D
How many bottles you need !!!!

Jeff, I am about to change the oil in my 3rd generation to Royal Purple MC specific synthetic. I am currently running the Royal Purple synthetic car oil and I find that it makes my shift from 1st to 2nd a little grindy at high RPMs. I'll let you know what I think. I got Pep Boys to order it for me at $8 a quart.
I wanted to try the Mobil 1 MC specific oil but had trouble finding it near my home unless I wanted to buy it from the dealership at $12/quart.
Hey jesse when we get to mootmag I will let you ride mine and you give me an impression on how it acts... See if the problem is bike specific as you know I run the car purple....
Thanks, Allen. It would be really good to know if it's bike specific.
I've also been trying to figure out if its my shifting, but I'm fairly sure I have the throttle completely closed before I pull in the clutch. Like I said, it really only does it when I'm shifting at higher rpms.
Have you installed a new clutch yet? Did you have any abnormal wear? And how many miles did your clutch last? I imagine we ride our bikes about equally hard. :)
Oh. And I just got in from the oil change. I'll take it for a ride a little later and see if it's different. Have some more things to do.
Nah have not done the clutch yet it is next on my list yeah probably about the same hehehehehe I don't know if this clutch has ever been done....
Thanks Jesse I look forward to hearing your thoughts of it. At the moment I have several gallons of Rotella to use but if need be I can use it in the truck unless it gets synthetic first.
Allen, I'll send you the holder and I'll let you determine it's worth. :) Seriously tho I just need two bottles of the Ice.
Well with the hard work you put in it from what I saw it's worth more than 2 but I can get more if you need it along with other royal purple stuff lololololo heck I have asembly oil from royal purple and can get there grease too....
Jeff and Allen,
I noticed on the Royal Purple site that Purple Ice has corrosion inhibitors in it, much like the automobile coolants. I'd double check and make sure they were not silicate corrosion inhibitors. Honda specifically says not to use these in the engines because it will damage the block and water pump.
When I was looking for coolant, I found a few automobile coolants that did not have silicates listed but when I called the information lines I found out they did.
Just wanted to pass this along for those that have ???ed the use of regular royal purple as far as modifiers or the such in motorcycle specific oil and regular sae or racing.....
Motorcycle
Does Royal Purple® offer specific motor oils for motorcycles?
Yes. While the Royal Purple SAE and Racing engine oils may be used in motorcycle applications the Max-Cycle® line of engine oils has been formulated specifically for motorcycle engines and transmissions.
Will Royal Purple® cause my clutch to slip?
No. Royal Purple® provides exceptional film strength for excellent metal-to-metal protection, yet it is also safe for use in wet-clutch applications.
This is from there web site I figure maybe some of you have read this....
Yes. Allen I had read that. Thanks for passing it along though.
So far my preliminary findings are that the Royal Purple Cycle-Max has improved shifting over the regular Royal Purple . I think it's quieter than it was and the 1st to 2nd shift at high rpms does not have the grindy feel that it did.
I have another issue, that I believe now may be temperature related. Now that the weather is warmer, I am getting a knock at the top of the engine where the cams are after the bike gets hot. It doesn't do it the first few minutes it starts up but it shows up after it's been ridden hard.
Everything else seems to be fine so I'm not going to worry about it. I'll just listen to some bikes a MootMag to see if I hear the same thing, or if anyone notices my knock. The only funny thing is that I didn't notice it until after I changed the oil...
probably nothing to worry about mine does it to an extent but I don't let it bother me.....
Well, I've started riding with ear plugs... so it's really not an issue now. :)
Thanks. It's good to know that. This Royal Purple sounds like some good stuff from what I've read. Granted its all their propoganda.
So Allen, do you change out your filter every 3 or 4,000 miles like RP says on their site?
Check this out I forgot to mention about the silicates but have sent him back a ?? about that....
Allen,
The RP Purple Ice Coolant Additive works great in combination with a mixture of coolant and water at treats rates of 1 oz per quart of cooling system capacity.
I'm curious as to Honda's statement "and the manuals are
> specific about corrosion inhibitors causing corrosion in are
> engines specifically the Honda V4 engine..."
If it is a corrosion inhibitor why would it promote corrosion?
My take on this is that Honda has a branded product that they would prefer you to use but the coolant and additives do not know to NOT work in a Honda 4 cycle water cooled engine and yet work fine in any other 4 cycle water cooled engine.
Corrosion could occur in a motor cycle if the owner chooses to run straight water and then incorrectly uses a demineralized or distilled water in the all aluminum engines. These types of water have had the minerals stripped from them so that when you put them in straight (100% with zero coolant/ antifreeze) there is nothing to neutralize the water from stripping metal out of the engine block and radiator.
If you are wanting to run straight water, use just plain tap water or softened water with 1.5 oz of Purple Ice per quart of water added to the system.

David

Alright and this also about silicates form the man him self....
Silicate corrosion inhibitors tend to leave a whitish powder on the
aluminum
- you might be familiar with this if you've used the traditional
greenish
yellow antifreeze coolants which use a silicate corrosion inhibitor.
Purple Ice does not contain silicates - it uses a molybdate corrosion
inhibitor package similar to the newer organic acid technology found in
the
extended life coolants in diesel trucks and Dexcool.

Ok I know I am getting annoying hehehehehehehhe one more.....
This one is about motorcycle specific Royal purple
The RP 10W40 is API SL / CF-4 rated
The MaxCycle 10W40 is formulated to the older API SG service category.
The newer API gasoline categories in conventional mineral or synthetic
oils
will have slightly less anti-wear additives to meet stricter emissions
being
imposed by the US Government EPA. This is especially evident in the
new API
SM package. So the motorcycle oils have a slightly more robust wear
protection package.
In Royal Purple's case, due to the RP Synerlec additive technology
which
increases the oil film strength literally by a factor of 4, it is a
mute
point.
Attached is an API Service Classification guideline that may help clear
this
up.

David
