Title: Think I figured out that noise.
Post by: MagnaDaddy on December 20, 2009, 10:55:21 PM
I finally had the time to open up Lightning again to doule check the valve adjust I made a couple of months or so back and it looks like my front cam chain is loose.  She's been sitting for about two weeks due to the noise and cold rainy weather.
Am I right or aren't these supposed be "self-adjusting tensioners?  So I'm guessing that I'll need to replace it maybe?

and that it likely does need to be replaced.  It will run fine this way, but sounds horrible.

Interesting part is it sounds better once it's warmed up....

It's bee a couple years since I rebuilt the heads do you have to pull the cams to replace the tensioner?

That's good news,  my memories of reworking the heads on this puppy are not my fondest....
So, I guess I'll crack the manual open tonight

Do me a favor and take some pics. Or better yet, video.
Charles has done this a couple of times and makes it sound easy. But what's easy for Charles ain't necessarily easy for us of the five thumb race.

Not OUT, but the caps come off.  Front is ALOT easier than the back due to access.
Here is the guide I followed while doing mine.
