Post by: Charles S Otwell on February 15, 2010, 10:54:16 PM
Hey Lawrence, I've sent you a PM. For the rest of you, if I wanted to be laughed at  I would have posted the question on here, but I don't, so I didn't :???:.

You DO have to plug it in. (http://i43.tinypic.com/2q8ymhk.jpg)

Two negatives don't make a positive. (http://i43.tinypic.com/2q8ymhk.jpg)

Who would laugh at you Charles? (http://i43.tinypic.com/2q8ymhk.jpg)

Actually I don't mind being laughed at :P, but if I post the question on here, everyone will run to google then post a half page of technical data that they don't understand either, besides, why waste a perfectly good electrical engineer :D. I mainly posted so Lawrence would check his PM's, that and I've already got Terry's curiosity up whether he admits it or not, and that's worth being laughed at. 8) 8)

Y'know, Charles, all too often the answers are not obvious even when the question is squarely in somebody's field. I have stumped people with more degrees than a Fahrenheit thermometer and experience to match, and I have also been tripped up by people who barely managed to drop out of high school. It has all convinced me that nobody but nobody is a full-time expert on anything. The only thing that will be embarrassing is if one of us should know the answer but doesn't, so ask away!

Being the IT guy at work, people are always saying, "This may be a stupid question..."
My view is that the only stupid question is the one you should have asked, but didn't. Don't tear something up because you don't want to ask a question.

Ok, here is the low down, I finally got around to replacing the broken chrome tach cover on the Valk, when I removed the cover I realized the plastic housing was going to require some repair also. When I removed the tack I also realized that with a couple of brkts I could move the tach and speedo up 2&1/2 inches and back an inch putting them in a more user friendly location (adding 6&1/2 inch risers had left them low and hard to read) What has this got to do with electronics, :-? nothing, but since everything was apart anyway it seamed like a good time to upgrade the lights in the guages (stock are really dim and hard to read) having taken a basic electronics course back in the 90's I had a box full of led's and resistors, so I decided to use what I had. Rather than have to try and decode about 50 resistors and and not wanting to cause myself permanent brain damage trying to figure Ohm's Law and which resistors would give me the correct resistance to get me to 3.3v and 25mA, I ask Lawrence to figure it for me, and just tell me the answer without explaining or trying to teach me the formula. Now you guys know, had I ask the question on this forum I would have gotten a five page history lesson on Electronics. :-? :D

PS after all that sorting and soldering the led's were too dim anyway so I went to the parts house and bought prewired 12v led's that worked out great 8).. Thanks after all that I needed a good razzing :D :D :D

Where's the photos of what you bought?

I did the same for a license plate light on my dual sport bike, rigged up my on LED with a resister, what a pain.

If you would have hooked the ground wire back up, the lights would have been brighter.
