Title: Floorboards or Footpegs
Post by: Jennifer F on March 28, 2010, 09:56:46 PM
I am looking to change the footpegs to floorboards for my 94 Magna.  Im wondering if you guys have any good suggestions.

Second thought, if I cant find floorboards, are highway pegs a good option?  And should I just get both?

Bike is running great now.  Went to my first meetup/rally this weekend.  It was fun!

I have never used floorboards, just pegs of various sorts.  I have one '96 with stock pegs and highway pegs on the engine guard.  I have another with Jardine forward controls.

I think I like the stock pegs, with highway pegs, better.  The forward controls are comfortable, but part of comfort is being able to change position occasionally.

All individual tastes, of course, but I don't care for the look of floorboards.  Others think they are cool.  To each his own.

IF you are able to put some floor boards on, it MAY reduce your lean angle as floor boards are usually wider than the pegs.. This MAY not be an issue for you, but is something to think about..
IF you do go floor boards, get into a parking lot and do some tight turns until you drag them on both sides.. You don't want to be doing 45 mph and it be the 1st time you drag your boards, It can make you jump and possibly send your bike in a direction you did not intend!!!
I have Mapam forwards.. I'm 6'1" and the stock pegs are way too short for my long legs, but I did miss my hiway pegs.. I make shifted some and they are a little high and a little close, but I can rest my legs across them like an easy chair on longer trips...

Here are a couple of pictures...
Note the pads on the highway pegs are up and slightly forward (which is odd - which fits me pretty well!) this is so I can rest the back of my heal comfortably.. (They do fold up)
(You can also partially note the Beer Can Oil Filter Mod, the airhorn mod, and the kickstand elevator mod )

Look close at the second pic and I believe you can see the can in the reflection.

Before this totally turns into a Seafoam discussion.........  I have Cobra floorboards on mine and totally love them.  I only have them for me.. the wifey (passenger) has stock pegs.  That explains the melted rubber shoe marks on my pipes.  I noticed some passenger floorboards for sale in bulk on ebay and have been considering those.  The rider floorboards allow for a lot of movement and I also have the motormount pegs.  I wish I had crash bars with pegs so that I can extend my legs farther.

I don't know if it matters to you or not, but floorboards may interfere with your foot placement when you are stopped.  I put my foot down aft of my foot pegs on the Valk and can stand flatfooted with no problems.  However, if I had floorboards, I would have to put my feet further outboard of what I am comfortable with.  I have floorboards on the Harley but it is so much lower that it does not matter.
Being vertically challenged, I either need short motorcycles, or thick soled shoes.

The only time the Magna floorboards are in the way is every other time I back out of something I hit a shin on them...  and it is painfull.
Title: Now onto windshields!

I think Im going to try wider footpegs for now.  I really dont have the option to adjust my foot placement because if it goes wider, I would be on my tippy toes at a stop.  At the moment, Im flat footed when stopped.

Jason has some pegs that are wider and fatter than the normal bar pegs.  I am going to see if those work for now.

As for highway pegs, I would need to buy not only the pegs, but the highway bar as well.  Im going to put his lower on my priority list.

After the pegs, Im looking to get a windshield that looks good with the Magna.  Any suggestions on that? :)

Ah Hoot, you slipped a comment in on me here.  Look at the date on the picture... 2007.  Obviously the floors were within the last few years.

OR.....  Ever see Transformers?

I am always watching for someone that are getting rid of their floorboards.  I think I will try some pegs that stick out a little farther.  I always feel like my feet are about to slip off the end of the pegs.

No, not necessarily.  You can attach a set of highway pegs directly to the engine mount bolts, if that position works for you...  Or you can get some P-clamps, peg "horns", and pegs and attach them to the frame.  <- I did this for a while until I got my forwards,  worked fine for me, but the forwards work better,,, for me that is.

As far as windshields, I like my Memphis PopTop.  Been through two other configs and settled on this one.  Not the most protection, but enough to be reasonably comfortable and it still looks good (<- you know, the ultimate trade off).

Rod.

I have two varieties of Memphis Shades on my bikes.  Please note that the mounts, if not universal, work for a large part of their product line.  Also note that if you break or lose components of the mounts, they will replace them for free!!  I bought a new mount before I discovered this, after my unscheduled get-off last year which pretty much destroyed the mount I had.

I have the "big shot" on the blue bike, which worked well for the original seat, but not quite so well with the Mustang.

The other bike came with a smaller, shorter 'shield, and I haven't decided yet whether I like it better or worse.

One interesting thing I noted was how much distortion in perception the windshields cause.  When I rode without one for awhile, the first impression was now wide the road seemed, at least in and under the bike.   I like riding without a 'shield.  If it wasn't so tiring, I would just leave 'em off...

+1 for the big shot (http://www.memphisshades.com/big_shot.shtml).. I suggest you get the Smoke (solar) color only - The colored shields tend to craze in a pretty short period of time.. I've had my smoke one for 4 years or so and only have one small spot of crazing (appears like little tiny cracks in the Plexiglas)
I'm 6'1 " and have a mustang seat.. I had to raise the mount as high as it would go on the forks, but is just about right..
The only bad thing about the windshield is there is no hand protection when it's cold..
The plus is it is easily removed and re-installed.

I also have a mustang seat, and I am only 5'7.  Are you saying that its a good fit with a mustang seat, or a bad fit.

Not sure who your question was directed to.. Probably Lawrence, but here is my response.

The mustang seat actually puts you a little higher then stock..
You will have the windshield where it belongs (close to the headlight) - mine is at least 1.5 inches above the headlight to make it the right height for me..
You should be fine.. The "proper" height for a windshield is for the top to be at about nose level so you can see over the windshield. I guess it will depend on how long your legs are compared to your body...
My wife has a tall windshield on her Sabre and she actually looks through the windshield, but that is the way she likes it..

Pic resize not pipe friendly.. same Cobra slashcut pipes.  Note the solar battery charger on the tank.  Helps with the Transformation.  Now if only I could install the Flux Capacitor.

I like the Memphis Fats 19".  I can see over it, relax or duck behind it.  It also has the 3-pouch things-holder on it.  Really handy.

I think it would work well at your height -- I am 5' 9", and two inches shorter would take me out of the buffet zone nicely.

I don't know what height has to do with it.. But I like being in the Buffet zone..
Breakfast, lunch or dinner, buffets are the best.. You gotta love America!!

...along with all the rest of the Parrot-heads!

I did not experience buffeting (turbulence) on my helmet with the Big Shot until I put on the Mustang Seat -- which moved my head (and the rest of the torso, too) up about 2 inches.  At least that's my theory, and I am sticking with it!!

So if Jennifer is two inches shorter, she should not experience this effect -- well, maybe not, anyway.  I suppose it depends where the 2 inches shorter accrues, above or below the seat.  Since I am short of leg and long of torso (try finding a low cost shirt whose shirt tail does not immediately slide up out of my waistband), I presume that she is at least two inches shorter in this applicable dimension.

I have the cobra floorboards on mine, they came with the bike. I scrape them routinely and would prefer not to have them in the corners... but I'm 6'2"-which isn't terribly tall-and they are just too comfortable to get rid of. I can easily move my feet to the front of them or keep them back in traffic.

At standstill I you could just put your feet down slightly behind them. I used to hit my shins on them but not very often now. The fact that your feet can be on a platform is very comfortable. I'm a fan of stripped down bikes but for everyday riding it's very comfortable.

Ideally I suppose forward controls and highway pegs would suite me more so I don't scrape but can still extend my legs. Someday, maybe.

As for a windscreen, I use a slipstreamer ss-20T stealth - the smoke one - http://www.slipstreamer.com/Product/Cruisers/cruisers.html (http://www.slipstreamer.com/Product/Cruisers/cruisers.html) It's unique and not too tall. My head gets buffeted a little but yours may not being shorter. It's 14" tall and 30" wide.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, DR.
