Title: The way it was meant to be.
Post by: John Luttrell on April 15, 2010, 08:47:13 PM
Guys, I just have to say, that since I shimmed my carbs and dropped down one tooth on the front sprocket, my bike is running the best it ever has.  It is so much peppier than stock with the sprocket change, it's unreal and since the shimming of the carbs, even my exhaust sounds better with a deeper tone to it.  Very happy with it...................

Outstanding, John.  Good work.

I like to work on stuff anyway, but tuning up the bikes is the best.  Very favorable struggle-to-fun ratio...

John.. Remind me of the set-up..
Are you running stock pipes, K&N, jets, how many shims did you add, how many turns did you take out the idle jets??

The bike is a 2000 model that I bought new and I'm running the Jardine Drag pipes on it, with stock air filter.  With this set up, I had no lean surging or flat spots, but I did have some popping on decel.  Last winter I messed up and allowed some gas to go bad in my carbs and the slow jets became clogged, causing the bike to not run.  So knowing that I was going into the carbs, I begged Greg long enough to get him to donate some .020 shims for the project.

I disassembled and cleaned the carbs and replaced the floats while I was in there; I stayed with the stock jets.  I added 1 shim to the needles, though I had to fight the urge to add two, I'm glad I didn't as the bike runs great with 1 shim and the popping on decel is gone.  I adjusted the mixture screws out to three turns on all of the carbs.
