Title: Bike wont run except at full choke
Post by: tmds3 on May 07, 2010, 04:20:38 PM
OK I am finally getting the bike ready after aver a year of not being able to ride, replaced the battery which was dying. Fired up the bike and it will only run at idle at full choke.  I plan on going thru and cleaning the carbs since it sat so long. I know I need the shims from Radio Shack to shim them for the midrange but any other ideas. It is stock exhaust and filter. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm another Seafoam convert. Same thing with the bike I bought exactly. I added some new gas and put about 2 oz. seafoam per gallon and a tank and a half later, it's working perfectly.

Give the seafoam a try if it doesn't work carbs need a good cleaning jets are proably clogged.

Well when I put the bike up last March(09) I filled the tank and put sea foam and Sta-Bil in the tank. The bike is out of inspection right now since I havent been able to ride for a year and right now not running well enough to be able to get an inspection on it. When I replaced the air filter I sprayed some carb cleaner in it and it helped a little. So should I just plan on doing the carbs?

carb cleaner in these carbs is a big no-no. it will tend to eat and break down the rubber inside. not saying this is your problem, but i wouldn't do it again without removing at the minimum the vacuum slides. they are about $100/each x4 adds up real quick.

HOLY CRAP I did not know that, might be one expense mistake on my part then. Hope not.

I would empty out all gas and start with Fresh fuel and a good dose of Sea Foam. Crappy gas can be frustrating.

Working on that one today, hopefully runs better after words.

O.K drained the tank empty and put new gas with sea foam in the tank, ran the bike till the carbs were empty and then fired it back up and let it run for about 10 minutes, good news is it will run without full choke now, bad news wont idle under about 1200-1500.
So what is the consensus, should I go ahead and redo the carbs?
Going to pull the plugs and give them a good cleaning(gonna let them sit in carb cleaner) change the oil and see what happens after the plugs.

Low speed jets are probably clogged you could try running it with seafoam for a couple of tanks and see if it clears up if it doesn't then pull the carbs.

Pending on your time what Jerry said might work, personally I would pull the carbs and be done with it.

If you haven't done so  already, do a spark test to make sure everything is firing. I cleaned the carbs and I still had a problem keeping the engine running. If felt like two of the cylinders were cutting out, then it simply  wouldn't start. After pulling most of the hair out of my head trying to figure out WTH was going on, I eventually wound up replacing the ignition pulse generator, resodering a wire to the ignition control module and replacing a couple of spark plug boots for good measure. Long summer in the garage for Maggie.

Forgot to update this , pulled the carbs and the slow speed jets were completely clogged, cleaned them out and ran like a dream. Sold the bike on Tuesday and the new owner drove it to VA, he messaged me and said the bike ran like a dream but was a long haul back to VA from Bedford.
