Read through the link below after finding it on another board that I frequent. Very interesting read. I have since changed my 09 Tacoma 4.0 over to Mobil 1 0W-30, and also just changed the Magna over to Mobil 1 0W-40.

Let me know what you think?

I haven't read through all of it yet but it's very interesting for sure. There's also quite a debate on this article over here:

I've yet to read through all 16 pages of that thread but it seems that the great oil debate is not dead yet ...
I used to use mobil 1 0-20 in my civic, but then it disappeared off the shelves, never to be see again.. I havn't seen it up in michigan in at least the last 3 years.
I personally used 0W-20 Mobil 1 in the 575 Maranello... in the Lamborghini.. my Maybach 57... My Enzo Ferrari... in the new Maybach 57s AMG.
2 mil in cars... And he cares about the engine oil and repairs? Prolly goes ballistic if someone parks in his spot.. Some peoples priorities... :?

I think the guy's a plastic surgeon and he's quite the car guy. For the record, I don't like it when someone parks in my spot at work either ... it's taken quite some time to find a spot that is relatively safe from other drivers (not to mention the campus landscapers) who are less courteous and respectful of other people's property than they should be. I'm willing to walk almost any distance if I know my car or bike will be safe and not end up with dings all over it. It's much less of an issue with the bike as there's plenty of room on either side of it so that even if someone has difficulty getting their car between the lines, there will almost certainly still be an acceptable buffer around it. I work very hard and take very, very good care of my "transportation" and I would rather it not accumulate any unnecessary damage.
Yes sir, when I read parts of the BITOG chat it was "Holy Over-analysis Batman!!" I think those boys have taken this a bit too far. Key point is that a 0W oil will flow better when cold then a 5W oil, while retaining the same warm oil properties of all 30 oils. Personally, I hadn't looked at the cold viscosities of the different oils until reading this. It still makes sense to me to run the 0w oils. Also it appears that a 0W oil will mean that it's predominately a Grp III+ or Grp IV oil.
Yes, the debate will continue on until lube is not necessary anymore....
As for availability, I found the 0W-30 and 0W-40 at one of my local Walmarts. Now, I have 3 Walmarts within a 5 mile radius and only 1 stocks the 0W-40 and 2 stock the 0W-30, so it's not everywhere. Also checked my local Advance Auto and they had neither.

I've got the same issue locating 0w40 locally ... the stuff is hard to find. The issue that I have with all of this is that many auto manufacturers (especially the foreign guys) have specific certifications that are required in order to maintain warranty status. My wife's Acura RDX, for example, has one and only one oil that is certified for use (Mobil 1 5w30). Fortunately, that's an oil I can almost always get at Walmart for a reasonable price. My Audi is another story completely ... Mobil 1 0w40 is certified but it's not easy to find locally so I usually end up ordering Valvoline SynPower 5w40 online. Given that it takes 10 quarts at a shot, it's a two case order too. I'm certain that equivalent brands would protect just as well but I don't think I would use them ... at least during the warranty period anyway.
You are certainly correct. My wife drives an 09 VW Jetta TDI, and there is no generally available oil that meets VWs TDI oil specs, have to go to the dealer. But at least the dealer isn't raping us on the cost. It's higher, about $7/qt, but not as bad as it could be, given the limited supply.
When I was looking around I saw that you can get M1 0W-40 through Amazon with free shipping for about the same price as Wally World (actually a bit better since there's no sales tax).
Thanks to our wonderful Governor, I get to pay sales tax on most thing I purchase on Amazon :(
I usually get my oil from www.oil-store.com (one of the few places that carry 5w-40 Valvoline)
Prices are higher than they used to be and shipping does add a bit to that but there's no sales tax so I'm still slightly ahead.
