Title: Air box modifications to a 84 VF700C Magna
Post by: Cadmandu on July 02, 2010, 07:01:00 AM
Hi All,
I asked this question in another post as a reply to DG, but it was such a good question I wanted it to have a fresh start. How can I find out how many guys on the forum have a 84 VN700C?

I bought a 96 VN800-B1 Vulcan Classic a few weeks ago. They have this method called scooterizing.
http://www.angelfire.com/ak5/russwolf/airbox.html
It requires performance pipes, modified air box and cover, and a dyno jet stage 1 kit. Can I do something like this to my 84 VF700C? I have removed the the baffles and drilled (8) holes in a bolt circle dia of about 4" in the SS back plate in the end of my megaphone slip ons. Would this be considered enough to put a stage one kit in and do some mods to my airbox. Does the 84 have any EPA crap that I can remove?
I have Maggie hanging from a cross beam in my garage. I rebuilt both forks with new bushings fork and slider, progressive springs, and new seals, dust and oil and new circlips. While the forks were apart I polished both sliders to a chrome finish. I will be changing the coolant today and putting new brake pads on also. I should be on the road again by Saturday. I would have never been able to do all of this work without all of your help and just reading old threads.

Thanks to all

I see you are boldly wading into the world of Honda V-4 Carburetors; you can not begin to understand just how finicky motorcycle carburetors can be to modifications to the air flow, both on the intake and exhaust side of the system.  On the 84 model, there is not any smog stuff to remove unless it's a Cali bike.

You will need to go to the pro that has tried about every mod on a Honda V-4; Dave Dodge.  He will be able to advise you on the best way to go about squeezing more power out of the bike, as well as which mods will NOT work.  Here is his contact info; bare with him, he is notoriously slow about answering getting back with you.

Thanks John,
Would it be better to just add a stage 1 and a K&N air filter and call it a day?

That would probably save you a lot of headache, trying to mess with the air box.  Here is a good article on the first gen V-4 carburetors; although if shimming is all your doing, you won't need to completely tear them down.

Note:  I can't find it now, but I recall reading some where that the idle jets can not be removed on the first gen carbs.  Anyone else recall the details on that?

Thanks John,
That carb article is just perfect. Did you look at that article on scooterizing a Vulcan. The vulcan has the same type carb the V45 has. It is a CVK36, but it only has one. I believe the Magna has CV32 but four of them.
