ok so i got her about 2 months ago, worked like a dream. started fine, ran fine, everything. untill monday. so im riding home monday and the bike stalls, i think its gas. ( i push it home bc im just down the street at this point) the next day put some gas in it and then start her up. EXCEPT she doesnt start. not sure why but doesnt, its trying to turn over but just doesnt ever get there. so i then continue to replace the petcock which was already leaking very little here and there. and do some other stuff. still no work. so here's what i have done:
1. gas is in tank
2. batt. works (lights and signals work)
3. changed the petcock
4. made sure the batt. is connected good.
5. pulled the spark plugs and there good
WHAT CAN I DO, SHOULD I DO OR ANYTHING, JUST PLEASE HELP ME!!!!????
Maybe the gas lines are plugged or possibly pinched somewhere? I would trace the lines out and be sure they they are clear and not pinched.
Just looked in the Clymer manual. Here is the list they had under the trouble shooting section for engine not starting.
Obstructed fuel line, leaking head gaskets, low compression, weak ignition coil, weak pulse generator, weak spark units, bad high tension leads to plugs, loose or broken ignition coil gound wire or other loose electrical connections.
Hope this helps some.
When you pulled the plugs were they wet or smell like gas quite a bit? Or were they very dry and no gas smell to them?
If they were wet then I would highly suspect an ignition related problem. Maybe coils or ignition module.
If they were dry then a fuel delievery problem, since it was running just fine then all of a sudden quit running, check the auto fuel cut off diaphram.
What about the fuel pump?? Maybe its gone south.

This bike is my son's. He (Duffy) had taken it to a shop where they were going through all the steps until we said STOP!!! A couple of fuel lines were falling apart and the fuel pump was weak. Changing them out didn't get it going so we held off until we could have a meeting of the minds. I went to the shop to have that meeting today. She had a good spark yet would not fire even with starting-fluid. Compression was about 110# but jumped up to 150 with some oil squirted in. Sounds to me like the rings are not seating. The bike has only 14K miles on it so somewhere along the way it must have sat up a long time. Before we got it the owner had successfully gotten it running but it didn't stay that way. Fortunately, for now, the carbs are probably ok and (for now) there are no ignintion module problems.
We will either be tearing into the rings or looking for a stronger engine, maybe with carbs etc. for spare parts. Jump in if you have any better ideas.
Thanks in advance for your help.
David
I am very seriously leaning towards that the slow speed jets among others are clogged in the carbs.
Pull the bowls and unscrew the jets (one at a time LoL) and clean them with cleaner and and old toothbrush.
I bet this will get it running.
I was thinking the same thing Greg mentioned(only because I read it elsewhere Greg had posted) and I think that the added ethanol in the gas is breaking down all the gunk in the gas tank and fuel lines. My 84 V65C is having about the same problem. It won't idle hardly at all but at 4K - 5K rpms it starts running very well. It was running perfect until I added the new fuel to it. I'm going to replace the fuel filter and clean the carbs and see if that does it.
With the new ethonal contents in the gasoline available I am finding with information from others that we are lacking in octane. Try using mid-grade or premium, so far it has been working pretty good.
My Valk as well as the 96 have become quite cold natured and not wanting to idle very good since the introduction of the ethanol.
Just finished putting the V65 back together and it turns out it was clogged low speed jets. Three of the four were clogged up. After cleaning the carbs I also disconnected the fuel line at the carbs and ran some fuel through to flush it and then added a clear inline filter. It sure runs a lot better now.
I'vwe been reading this thread and have a question. They way you guys are talking, you can't get gas without ethonol in it. Is that correct? Just curious.
All the gas in this part of the country contains up to 10% ethanol. They started doing it when gas prices got outrageous. I've had to switch to premium and mid-grade to keep my Magna from pinging.
Thanks Jess. We have it up here, but there is still a choice. It doesn't appear any cheaper either. One gasohol place has one pump with 100 octane, leaded racing fuel. Off road use only.
Jeff glad to hear the V65 was slow jets clogged and nothing major.
